First I would like to thank every one at swfa for the great service. Now my problem I won a pentax whitetails unlimited 6.5x20x50 scope in the photo contest. I finaly got some A.R.M.S. #22QD med rings for it. I had originaly planned on mounting this scope on my Bushmaster M4A3 16"carbine,however because of the overall length, eye relief and charging handle clearance I mounted it on my Springfield M1A. I took the M1A to the range today to sight it in and ran out of adjustment I was about a foot high and 7inches to the left and had no more windage or elevation adjustment left. The leupold that I had on the M1A originally had plenty of adjustment left with the same rings. Any help or advise would be greatly apreciated.

M1awolf,

What distance were you zeroing at? Best guess with out seeing the rifle or you shooting it is something is tweaked or not straight. Recheck where the scope mount attaches to the side of the receiver on the rifle, then double check that the mount / base  runs straight and isnt pitched off a little to one side. Check that the bases are straight & not canted off to the side & run straight down the bore (use a lapping rod or thick wooden dowel, even a piece of broom stick will work in a pinch). If everything is ok put a different scope and see if it still dose it.

I originally had my leupold mounted on my M1A with an ARMS #18 base and ARMS #22med quick detach rings and it was zeroed perfectly. The only change that I made was to puchase new ARMS #22med rings to mount the Pentax scope,I did not remove the #18 base when I mounted it. I took the Leupold and the #22s and put them on my Bushmaster. I tried the pentax and the 22s on the bushmaster as well not much room to get to the charging handle but I was able to fire it and had close to the same results, high and to the left with no adjustment left. I find it hard to believe that it could be the mounts or rings as the ARMS are some of the best for these type of rifles.BTW I was zeroing at twenty five yds.

I know 25 is supposed to work and you should be able to at least hit paper.  But I would give it a try at 100yards just to make sure.

I bet your Pentax does not have as much adjustment as your Leupold scope that you had on your rifle before. Also your new rings might need to be lapped?

m1awolf,

You didn't change the base. Did the new set of rings check out ok? Are both square and true? Put a lapping rod in them and check to see that one or both isnt canted just a hair. They may need to be lapped. It real easy to do (almost all rings need to be lapped a little). You tried the scope / rings on another rifle with the same results, it is ethier the scope or the new rings. Try a different scope in the new rings just to completely rule them out as a cause. If the older scope is fine in the new rings I would point a finger at the new Pentax as being the cause of your problems.

Try attaching the rings opposite of the way you originally did and see if the problem goes in the other direction.  98% of the time if the reticle is responding to adjustment your problem is mount related.
