Hello,
I'm looking at upgrading the scope on my Winchester Mod 88 .284 that I got when I was a kid. (many moons ago) Cool.   It's been in the back of my gun safe for years and I don't know a thing about mounts and rings and such since all my current rifles are ARs with LaRue mounted ACOGs, Eotechs, Accupoints and the like.  What would you recommend?  Price is a minor concern but not really.  I think I would like a lower power variable with a lighted reticle......any input or advice would be appreciated.  I also recently acquired my Dad's Model 70 30.06 and would like to put a scope on it.  Specific recommendations on mount/rings/scope would be great. Big Grin
Thanks.

from what i can see weaver and redfield are the only one who make bases for the m88. after that you can decide what rings you want. the m70 will be easy everybody makes mounts and rings for it.

..............If that is the case, then imo, certainly nothing over 5x-6x on the high end if you do go with a variable. Very adequate for deer and elk even out to 350-400 yards.

For a handy lever, I like a lower powered straight tubed variable like a 1.5x5x20 VX111, which is the same scope I rotate between my 300 WSM compact and 375 Ruger.

They are light weight, very fast acquiring and aiming which is needed for the handier levers  and they have wider FOVs.

If you feel you need more than a 5x, then the 1.75-6x32 or the 2.5-8x36 VX111s are very good.

I have a Winchester 88 and if I were to keep it, yes it is for sale.  I would put a 2.5-8x36 VXIII and be done. This scope is awesome  and looks good on an 88   Excellent

A Sightron S2 2-10x32 is on my Rem 700 30-06.Plenty of eye relief FOV which have Redfield steel base and rings.Scope is crystal clear and brighter than the Leupold VXIII 2-8x36.I found the Sightron to be a better value.I sold  all mythe Leupold VXIII to buy Sightron scopes which are now on most of my hunting rifles.

Why not a Trijicon AccuPoint 1.25-4x? Apparently you already use AccuPoints, and I have hunted a lot with the 1.25-4x, fnding it ideal for the kind of hunting you describe--and it doesn't require batteries!

I'd consider the new Trijicon 1-4.  With your ranges, 4X is plenty.  The 3-9 is a nice scope (I just bought one for my son's Tikka .308) and I can recommend it with confidence.

Bushnell also makes a 1-4 with illumination, but I haven't used it so cannot speak from experience.

For your needs, I'd definitely consider something in the 1-4 range, or maybe 2-7.

i thought about trijicon, but i cant justify the extra money, i can get the leupold in my price range, where the trijicon is almost double the price.

Personally I'd put the Zeiss Conquest 2.5x8x32 on both rifles.  I bought one of those to put on my X-Bolt .308 and I love it.  It's brighter than my Vari-X III 2.5x8x36.  AND you can get them for under $400.00.

Thanks for all the helpful input.  You guys are great.  I have the new TR24G on order for my LWRC M6A2.  Once I get it I'll decide on the others.  I'm thinking a bit more reach for the .284 and 30.06 would be nice.  Maybe the 3-9X40 AccuPoint.
