Hey guys,

So I've got my scope choice narrowed down to 4, tell me which way I should go.  It will be going on a .270 a-bolt, for hunting whitetails in SC over food plots, mainly in the evening.  So light gathering is a concern.  These are all from Sample list, so if Demo-A vs Demo-B quality is a concern let me know.  Many thanks!

1.) Leupold VX-3L, 3.5-10x50, 1" tube, duplex. Demo-A.  for $560

2.)  Zeiss Conquest 3.5-10x50, 1" tube, rapid-z 600. Demo-B. for $620

3.) identical Zeiss Conquest except for rapid-z 800.  Also Demo-B, Also $620

4.)Zeiss Conquest 3-12x56, 30mm tube. #8. Demo-B. for $750.

I know the 56 will gather light better than 50, but will it do it marginally better or is there a real difference between the two that's worth the extra $130 or $190.  Thanks and I look forward to hearing from you.

My personal choice, based on the described application would be #3. I would not be concerned about it being " demo b " SWFA is known to under rate the items on sample list. you will probably have to look pretty hard to tell if it's ever been mounted.

thanks for the response!  i didn't think the demo classification would be a concern, but just wanted to throw that out there to see if it would make a difference in some people's minds from the leupold to the zeiss.  thanks again.

WTB, check out my post here:

On what a Demo-B unit looks like.  I would not hesitate to buy a Demo-B unit again.

castlebravo, that scope looked brand new from what i could tell.  i'm very glad i found this forum and the samplelist-i'm going to get a great deal on whatever i end up getting.  at this point i'm leaning towards the leupold, as i don't know how much the rapid-z reticle would stand out in low light situations.

Also, if I do go with the VX-3L, do the Butler Creek flip open scope covers work with the crescent shape on the scope, or do I need to go a different route for a scope cover?

so i got it down to 2 now.  either the 3.5-10x50 vx-3L or the conquest in 3-9x50 with #4 reticle.  i'm ready to pull the trigger on one of these, but need y'all to choose one for me Big Grin

i'm kind of leaning towards the leupold, but that's just because that's what i've had in the past.  keep in mind i'll be hunting food plots in the evening  and shooting a maximum of 300 yards.

Not a Leupold fan, but it IS your scope.  I would have chosen the 3.5-10 Conquest for the type hunting you described.
My preferences do not necessarily reflect those of anyone else...

thanks, there's just so many dang choices, it seems to get more confusing the more i research them.   i'm going to hold off on ordering one until the end of today.  maybe then the answer will come down from heaven and shine upon me.

If it were me, I would go with the conquest and never look back.  I got a sample list 4.5-14x50 with hunting turrets and the #4 reticle last month.  Great glass.  Better than any leupold I've ever had.  I like the narrow #4 posts on the conquest.  Helps at very low light when aligning the target.  I prefer it heaps over the #4 Leupold I have. I was very close to getting a Rapid Z reticle, but in the end I'll most likely end up sending my conquest in for target turrets anyway, because the #4 gives me the low-light performance I want.  Good luck, and as others have said, it is Your scope, so get what You want.

I'm not a fan of 3-9, but you chose well.  I don't think you will EVER be unhappy with that choice.

I guess I need to get a Zeiss scope at some point in the futureCool
Outside of their top of the line (Hensoldt), what would be a good LR scope?

Check out the Victory Diavari FL's.... I'm sure you can find somthing to your liking and the glass is superb.  There are several reticles of interest for long range.

That said, I'm probably looking at March as one of my next LR scopes...
