I have two rifles that need scopes and my options are to buy two mediocre ones or buy one good one and one cheap one until I can afford another good one.  I'm leaning toward the latter scenario.

As such I'd like to know if anyone has experience with "cheap" scopes that demonstrate pretty good repeatability/tracking.  By cheap I'm going to say < $200.  I know at this price range the glass is going to be poor...the turrets are going to be mushy...etc.  The one thing I'd like to know is if there are any of these "cheapies" that have reliable mechanics for the price.

Scope will go on a .223 used for varmint and "playing around" at longer ranges.  Some of the basic features I want:
- Variable power
- Top end magnification min 14x (preferrably more)
- Mil-dot reticle
- Target style turrets

Here are some of the ones I see on the site that meet my basic features... but have no idea about their repeatability/tracking:

http://www.swfa.com/pc-10573-1507-mueller-85-25x44-tactical-riflescope.aspx
http://www.swfa.com/pc-5607-742-tasco-6-24x42-target-varmint-riflescope.aspx
http://www.swfa.com/pc-4702-705-simmons-6-21x44-prohunter-master-rifle-scope.aspx

http://www.swfa.com/pc-12782-2213-vortex-6-24x50-crossfire-rifle-scope.aspx
http://www.swfa.com/pc-3822-213-bsa-6-24x40-mil-dot-riflescope.aspx

Do you think there is a scope in the mix here that has reliable tracking?

Are there any reviews/posts on any of these lines of scopes?  Opinions?  Data?  Suggestions?

Hmm....with all of your requirements you are going to have a tough time getting all of that in a cheap scope.  And it would be hard to find a quality used scope with all of that, too, because most scopes didn't offer all of that twenty years ago.

You could get a decent 4X12 with AO on ebay-- used--- as a reasonable varminter ( as long as it was a great scope in wonderful shape..)  And it would probably work better than a $200 cheapie scope that had all the bells and whistles but just ain't a good scope.  Smile

the bushnell 6x18 is suprizing given its cost, I used one on a 223 to train kids for years, also played with it on a break open air gun.  I would recommend it.

In this group I also like the bushnell and vortex, I'm not a tasco, simmons or bsa fan.

Yeah - good call on the 3200 10x - it seems to get a lot of positive comments.  It is still on my list to consider.  I was hoping for variable with a little more top end mag.  But if I don't get much positive feedback on some of the others I may end up there.

I know there will be trade-offs for this price range, just trying to see if there are any other gems (in a relative sense) in the lower price range.  I know the vortex line gets pretty good press but I don't know anything about the Crossfire.  Looks like I'll take a closer look at the Banner and the Crossfire.

With your list I would only go with the Bushnell, Mueller or Vortex.........as far as cheap scopes go these usually have a good review

What are the Legend turrets like underneath the caps?  I see they are short, but are they finger adjustable?

sgoptics,
Please read the forum rules.

This site is operated by SWFA, a retail optics dealer.  It is improper and disrespectful to advertise other optics dealers here on their site.

+1 for this scope!  It is one of my favortie cheapies of all time.  And the optics are very nice especially for the price, you get good turrets and it is tough as nails and has excellent repeatablity. It has a mildot reticle as well.

I realize this one doesn't meet all of your criteria but for the price it may be worth looking at.

Not sure you can get the V16's for under $200 but I have 3 of these and they have been great scopes for me.  I can vouch for the repeatability and durability.  2 of mine have excellent glass for the money.  The 3rd is not as good in that regard, a little more soft, but I bought it used for next to nothing and the rest of the scopes works as expected.
