 Can anything mechanically go wrong with a scope to shorten its eye relief?

It could, if a lense inside moves. But, at that point you would hear a rattle and would see a severy degraded image.

 Nope,no noise or image problems. I've come across an early 80s Vari-Xll 3-9x40 that has the shortest eye relief of any of these I've ever seen.
