Hello,

I am purchasing a Savage Predator rifle in .223 and I am wondering what others may suggest for predator hunting (coyote, fox and coon) in central Pennsylvania. I may also try calling in crows and shooting them if I can get them to land. My hunting area is farmland and old coal stripping areas mostly mixed in with small woodlots. I would imagine most of my shots will most likely be under 100 yards but out in the farmer's fields that could stretch to 300 yards or so if a predator presents itself. I will be using an electronic call. I will be hunting both during the day and night (with a light - hopefully a Lightforce 170) so that is where the hard choice comes in. If i was only going to hunt daylight I would most likely buy a Nikon Monarch 4-16 w/BDC but due to the night hunting I am considering the Mueller 4-16 Sport Dot (illuminated dot) or I already have an Eo Tech and could buy a 3X magnifier with flip mount but it is $500.00
I am leaning towards the Nikon with the hopes that night shooting won't be that difficult with a light but I am hoping someone may be using one of these options or another and will comment on same.

Thanks in advance

I like the Eotech and the 3x mag with the flip kit. I think the Nikon reticle will be hard to see at night. The muellers are good but I think the Eotech would be better personally.

Have you thought about the Bushnell 4200 4-16x40?  Also you are in the same money as the 3x9x40 Zeiss.  I say that because as populated as PA is, the shots are not that long, and the extra clarity and low light performance might help.  Most of your drop is within 4" at the ranges you are talking about, so you do not need a lot of hold over stuff.

If the 6500 is better than the 4200 I would go with it, You can not go wrong with the bushnell for the money..........I have two of them and really like them

I know this post is a little old but here goes.

I think your over scoping your rifle for the kind of hunting your going to be doing.  I think you'd find that FOV and clarity would be much more important than added power.  None of the critters are small targets.   I find that on my calling rifles lower power scopes work great.  My favorite is the Sightron S-II 1.5x6x42, very clear and great FOV.  Most of my other calling guns carry 1x4x20mm or 1.5x4.5x20mm scopes.  Nikon Monarcks, Luepold VX-II, Sightron S-II or Weaver GS will give you great glass in low powered scopes.   When I mention clarity I expect a 2" black square should have sharp clear defined edges and corners at 300yds.

A 20mm scope set at 3x will give you about a 7mm exit pupil and that is about as much light as the human eye can handle so the low power scopes will be quite bright also.

If you feel going as low as I do is scarry, a high quality 2x7 would do the trick.

In PA. CROWS: July 1-Nov. 24 and Dec. 28-April 6, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday only. No limit.
In Michigan our crow season is from 8/1-9/30 and 2/1-3/31. They can be shot at anytime if they are causing a nuisance or creating a health hazard. No bag limit. We also cannot shoot the common raven, which is protected. It is a much larger bird with a broader tail and beak.
Merc, where are you at? The Maryland DNR website shows
crow 8/15/08-3/15/09 with no limits. There are a smaller coastal crow and I can't tell if it is protected.

That's funny!
I am glad I looked into this. For one it got me to call the DNR in Newberry, MI for clarification on ravens.
Also, I did not know about the coastal crows you have. It sounds like they feast on clams.
