Never loaded much with them so someone enlighten me.  Looking at some cast bullets and they say .309  all of the other stuff i have loaded for a 30 cal gun has been .308.  Will that make a difference?

Also what do the gas checks do?

No that wont make a difference.  I think the gas check helps keep the hot gas from the ignited powder from eroding the heal of the lead bullet.  Big Smile  That's a complete guess, though.  Either that or it helps prevent gas from getting past the bullet.

looking at some 165gr flat nose cast bullets.  Hunter's choice? maybe thats the name.  Some are .309 then i see some cast that are .311 or so.  I just dont know enough to know if its safe or not.

most cast bullets are .001 oversize. gas checks are used to get higher velocities out of cast lead bullets which tend to strip in the riflings and cause leading. many theories on why they work, I believe the work  by simply scramping the bore out, the same way using steel shot loads clean and polish a barrel in a shotgun, or using jacketed bullets after a long session of using cast bullets.
