Does anyone know anything about this scope?

ZF 14x45 - Sport rifle scope by Carl Zeiss Jena DDR

It has a six-digit serial number and is "4-post" with a double german reticle, that I've been told was for leading a running target…maybe called a sporting scope and used for competitions.

Out of everyone I've show it to, no one has ever seen a scope like this one.

If i could attach a picture here, i would.

Jena was in East Germany after the War.  Yours is a Prewar scope most likely.  Jena is now called Doctor  and is still part of Zeiss.  With scopes that old, you get what you pay for, plus some antique value.

Jena is in the former East Germany (DDR), Zeiss did in fact start in Jena and at the end of the war some say that the U.S. Army took part of Zeiss to the west and some say it was at the request of the Zeiss family that the U.S. Army moved part of them to Stuttgart in West Germany (FRG).  Both operations belong to Carl Zeiss AG, the Doctor brand came about at around the time that the Wall came down and the two Germany's were reunited, my time line on this part may be off.  The Doctor is from the former East Germany operation of Zeiss.  East Germany Zeiss products were named Zeiss Jena for sale in the West, while West Germany products were named Opton for sale in the former East.

DDR = Deutsche Demokratische Republik = Former East Germany

FRG = Federal Republic of Germany = Former West Germany

When I was stationed in Germany most of my German friends who hunted looked at Jena (Doctor) products as junk and most of them wouldn’t touch them.  Now that Zeiss has moved all of its operations back to Jena this line may be very blurred.

As for your scope being named “Carl Zeiss Jena DDR” this would indicated that it was made in East Germany post WW II and pre 1990 or so.  Hope this helps you some.

Zeiss started in and was located in Jena before the war.  When the Soviet moved into east Germany and annexed it, Zeiss left for Wetzlar where they have been since.  I have a fine older Docter scope purchased in the 1990's and it was not junk.

I have a Praktica camera which was Carl Zeiss Jena ( circa 1989 ) and it, too, is not junk.

Back in the mid 80's the rep group that I worked for [ and still do ] represented Docter [ correct spelling ] for a couple years. It was a very hard sell because they weren't very well known. I thought the quality was quite good but I'd defer to Ilya or other knowledgable folks for their opinions.
