Hi, this is my first post on OpticsTalk.  I have a 4yr old Leopold VX1 4-12x40 scope that when on 12x doesn't allow me to focus at anything closer than about 50m.  I guess this is because the scope is set to be parallax free at 50m or maybe 100m.  Also, I can't focus on both the target & the crosshairs at the same time - I think this is only happening under 100m.  My eye can focus on the target but the crosshairs are blurry but if I then focus on the crosshairs, the target goes blurry.  Again I guess this is due to parallax.  I've tried adjusting the occular focus through its entire range, but that doesn't solve the problem.  The scope doesn't have an objective adjustment.  Also, I am short sighted, but looking through the scope wearing glasses.  Is this normal for a scope like this or is there a problem with the scope?

Hi Jonan,
Welcome to the OT.
Firstly there is nothing wrong with your scope. On the higher power settings the focal point (or depth of field) is very short, so close objects will not be in focus. On lesser power the depth of field increases and more "out of focus" objects will in fact appear to be in focus.
So this has nothing to do with parralax, which is placing your crosshair and target on the same focus plane.
You cannot use a high power lens to look at close objects unless it has a focus ring to adjust the focal point. Riflescopes do not have this. That is why a hunter needs a variable scope with a low end magnification such as 3x or so if he intends engaging targets at close distances.
The occular focus is used to focus your crosshair only. You need to look at the blue sky and see that your crosshair appears sharp and crisp. Do not stare at the crosshair for long, as your eye adjust. Take short looks and turn your occular focus ring untill it is nice and black and crisp.
Hope this helps.
