hi i just purchased a new remington cdl sf in 300 wsm and cant decide on the

leupold VXIII 2.5-8X36.

or the leupold VXIII 3.5-10X40.

this will mainly be my hunting rifle. shots will be 20yards out to 450 yards

Is the extra 2x in power really going to make a difference for the longer shots?

i really like the 2.5-8X36 for its size ands its fov. but am i going to miss the 10x for longer shots?

I also do alot of 100 yard accuracy work with reloads were in my other rifle, a 308 tactical i like the higher magnification(18x)

Is the 8x of the smaller leupold going to be ok for precision paper punching (building up accurate reloads)?

any advise will be appriciated

thanks

Hi & welcome to the forum!

Sounds like you have a very nice rifle!  I also have a 300WSM and it's an outstanding hunting round.

With regard to your question, any reason why you've narrowed down your selection to 2 Leupold scopes?  Have you looked any anything else?  I might could help with your choice but I'm curious why you've only mentioned VX-III scopes.

Also, what is your budget.  Not trying to be too nosy, just might help in knowing...

Some here are big Leupold fans, some are not.  I am not.  I would advise you broaden your scope selection some.  There are better scopes to be had for equal or less money.

What is your budget?

What do you "need"?

What do you want?

With a few details, many good options will be thrown at you.

Hi and thanks for your responses, i have spent all day yesterday looking at scopes.

I like the leupolds for the eye relieve ,size and looks

I find the bushnells large and eye releive is not as as good, i sold a 6-24x40 elite4200  to buy a 6-18x40 VXII for my remington 700p in 308win and am far happier with it. also the rainguard coatings on the bushnell 4200"s is not as good as the coatings on the VXII and VXIII"s next time your looking at scopes hold the two together and breath on them and see which one clears faster.

I looked at fullfields and signature selects but did not like them all that much.

Im not interested in weaver at all

I really liked the conquest but it does not come in silver here in canada.

Ya i live in canada were i cant get anything good.

The dealers here dont carry anything else like nikon, pentex, sighttron etc...

and kahls and ziess are out of my price range.

-My price range is 600 to 700 cad.

a VXIII 3.5-10x40 without b&c retical goes for 650 bucks up here

kahls and the like goes for 1099+ up here

- I would like a good f.o.v. on low power and and good magnifycation for the longer shots.

thanks again

Both are great scopes, but I like the 2.5-8 on short action rifles. They look like they belong there. From what I have seen of the Monarchs I have, Nikon sure looked at Leupold scopes when coming up with dimensions for theirs.

I have a 3.5-10 myself and find the optics to be far more than adequate for hunting at all legal hours. I have never had a reliability issue with a Leupold, either. VX-III, Conquest, 4200 or Monarch doesn't matter to me when shooting at big game. They are all very good for the middle of the pack and I would not worry about a Leupold.

8X is fine for sighting in and working up loads.

Good luck,

Doug
