I recently bought a Savage 12 lrpv ss in 308. I am planning on using this gun for deer and antelope hunting in Wyoming. I really don't have a clue as to what scope I should put on it. I would like to do this as soon as I can to get some practice in with the new set up. My goal is to take an antelope out past 400 yrds with it. I currently have two Hawke optics scopes an Endurance 30 3-12x50 and a Side winder 4-16x50 on a couple of .223's. I know that they aren't highly thought of on this site but mine have served their purpose for about 4 years and I have been able to shoot coyotes out to 290 yrds with them and can see pretty well with them. My problem is that you have to spend about 5 times the money to get a big difference in clarity and brightness. The Hawkes were both in the $300.00 range. I have looked through everything that the Bass pro, Gander and Cabelas in the area has to offer and can't seem to find anything I like that much better until I get over the $1000.00 mark. I currently have about an $800.00 max budget to get this new optic mounted on the gun. That can change with time, but it puts me in a time crunch for figuring out what it will shoot and where, and a lot of practice time. So finally, the question is, can I get something that is much better than the scopes I have currently, without spending $1500.00

If I were in those shoes I would be looking very hard at the Sightron SII Big sky. I have heard a lot of good about those scopes. And while I do not have the big sky edition, I do have the straight SII on my primary hunting rifle (260 Rem) and like that scope a lot. Just my $.02

Do you plan on dialing in your adjustments or use a hold over?

I would like to learn how to dial in the dope. I have been told by a couple people that know more than I do about it that it is the only way to ensure that you have the right dope. They say no matter how many little hash marks there are on the reticle that you can't be sure you are right on.

I would look at the 3-15 SS. It has pretty decent glass, and tracks dead-nuts. Plus it has matching reticle/turrets.
On a side note, being as you are from Illinois and plan on hunting in Wyoming, altitude will play havoc on your dope. You will have to confirm it again once you get there.

If it is tourist season, why can't we shoot them?

Cool. I wish I was crawling around the sagebrush in Wyoming instead of driving around the Dreaded DFW.
