My Leupold binos have been used quite a bit for the four or so years I've had them and I've noticed some fine scratches on the glass.  I've also noticed that I can't seem to get them to focus to the clarity that they once had.  I'm not sure if the scratches are creating the problem or not?  My question is, can I use some type of light buffing compound or something else to remove the scratches or are the binos now only as good as the worst scratches?  Thanks for any replies.

I'm sure that the latter ("only as good as the worst scratches") applies.

The only way to restore the binocular's performance is to have the damaged lens replaced, and I'm sure that Leupold would resort to this in a repair.  I've never done this, however, but it makes the best sense to me.

I'm sure others can give a technical answer, but if you are able to restore the smoothness of the damaged surface, I'm sure that the shape/contour of the surface has changed enough so that the performance is not "optimized" as it was originally.  This doesn't even consider the loss of the anti-reflection coatings.

Your best bet is to request a repair from Leupold.

Contact Leupold for repair. Leupold has a lifetime warranty and the best warranty so you shouldn't have a problem.

I've had to use the Leupold warranty on a binocular once and they honored it without hesitation.  I paid freight to Oregon and they paid the freight back.

They gave me a tracking number via e-mail so that I could go to their website and check the progress of the repair and get the expected return shipping date.

Great folks to deal with.  I never had a problem getting through on the phone and talking live with them.  My repair week took maybe ten or twelve days from the time that I dropped them in UPS until I had them back--and it's a good four day trip via UPS one way from Indiana to Oregon...

Just my two cents.
