Basic question here.

I know what the first number means is a rifle caliber, but what does the second set of number represent?

For example:

30-06
7mm-08
22-50

What does the 06, 08 and 50 stand for?

in 30-06 30 is for caliber, which is .30 or .308 to be exact, 06 refers to the year it was first produced 1906.
7mm08 is simply a .308 case necked down to a 7mm hence 7-08
22-250 is a 250-3000 savage necked down to a .224 or a 22-250 savage which they call the 22-250 rem

From that we learn that the 458 Lott comes from the story of Lot where it smashes everything with fire and stone causing total destruction ( trees too ).
