The wife and I went to Cabelas in Baton Rouge this past weekend. let me start by saying I still like Cabelas BUT here is my experience at the store. I found 2 shelf prices that did not match the scanning price, I wrote it down and when I got to the register they honored the price on the shelf tag. Before I went to the store I shopped on-line for a new hunting pack, I found the whitetail deluxe pack online for 49.00 and printed it out and brought it with me so I could find the same pack in the store, well in the store it was 79.00, again when I got to the counter they honored the price I found online. BUT what if I had not done my homework, it would have cost me about 50.00 more overall. I found the Grabber Mega Warmers 10 packs for 9.99, so I bought 3 packs.
the store was impressive, beautiful mounts all over the store, I did price a lot of products I was interested in, my over all impression was kinda like wal-mart, you have to pick and choose cause the pricing varies. I did find some items I can get cheaper at some of my local mom and pop hunting shops.
we had a good time shopping and eating out, all over the place in Baton Rouge and the old lady enjoyed it, kinda made up for being gone the whole deer season. Edited by Jsimoneaud - February/11/2008 at 19:46 |

We also have a new Cabelas store near Milwaukee, the store is very impressive to see, but I find it a little overwhelming. I find it much simpler to look through one of their catalogs or to use their web site. Like I said before it's impressive to see, just not that user friendly. Cabelas does have some of the best hard to find items and their quality far exceeds Bass Pro Shops, Just my personal view.

Cabelas has far better selection of hunting and shooting gear than Bass Pro. Our local Bass Pro has very little reloading supply inventory. Our Cabelas in Ft. Worth actually has a very good selection of reloading supplies, not to mention a pretty impressive selection of guns. Cabelas definitely has a better selection of hunting clothing, especially camo. Bass Pro may be a little better on fishing gear, though.

I've been to competitor in Sidney, Nebraska and the one in Hamburg, Pennsylvania. I think their store is fun, but the one in Pennsylvania is so crowded that you feel like you're Christmas shopping at the WalMart in Laredo, Texas at the International Bridge.
I like the fact that you can actually SEE and TRY ON the clothes and coats, but otherwise, you have to GET A TICKET (!!) to go up to the Gun Counter to see the guns and scopes!! That puts a damper on things---I can't enjoy myself like that. Their gun prices are about right, but their used gun prices are INSANE---I guess they've got the built-in trade-in factor marked on it.....but I won't be buying any used guns from THEM....and that includes their famous Gun Library.
The catalog is the way to go----for SOME items-------otherwise you can do better elsewhere on a lot of stuff...
And besides...THEIR PEOPLE DON"T KNOW GUNS AND OPTICS LIKE THE OPTICS TALK FORUM!! HA! -Ed

I like our Cabelas way better than our local "Carp Amatuer" as well. Way more knowledge at the Cabelas. As far as used gun prices...... you are right........ at least when they first put them out. If they don't sell at that price they will mark them down. I got a Browning Gold 20 gauge from them last week and they came down to a fair price.
I like to look at their optics......... but buy from SWFA! The only negative is they stock WAY to many Leupolds (every model I think) and not enough of the others..... like 4200s! And they don't have any Kahles!
I personally don't like to buy anything that has a "size" from a catalog. I want to be able to try it on! One thing nice they have started to do is if you can pick it up from the store.... there isn't a shipping charge. That's pretty nice!

The Jim and Dick's store in Dundee, MI had several.
I like going there because the store is huge and the mounts are great. What I do find is that they carry a whole lot of a little bit of everything. For example, if I'm looking for brand name clothing like Filson or Columbia the selection is limited compared to the catalog or web site.
