I have a chance to buy an elite 6500 - 2.5-7 scope for about the same price as a 4200 - 3-9 scope
Is the 6500 a better scope -why
Thanx!

I THINK that they both have the same glass. But the 6500 is a 30mm scope I believe where the 4200 is a 1 inch.

One of the optic Jedi's should be along shortly to verify.

I believe you may be in error on the power range of the 6500 Elite under consideration.
The 65 in the 6500 denotes the power range multiplier is 6.5. and the 2.5-7 does not add up.
The power ranges offered in the 6500 line are 1.25-8, 2.5-16, and 4.5-30.
Bboy623 is correct about the tube diameters.

Welcome to OT.

Thanks Coyote
you were right- it's 1.25-8 and it's on sale for 372 cad dollars at Lebaron sports in Toronto
I would have to buy new rings if I buy it-adding to the expense which brings me back to my original question - is the 6500 worth the extra expense compared to a 4200
Thanks again

I would think the wider FOV is worth it.  Doesn't sound like you would lose any FOV on the high end.

You haven't mentioned your intended use for the scope, but if it is for whitetails and/or black bear in heavy cover, the low power end on the 6500 would be the deciding factor for me.
That said, I have owned the 3-9 4200 and still have a 2.5 -10 4200, and they are great scopes for general use. In fact, the 2.5-10 is on my whitetail treestand rifle, but my part of the country is maybe a bit more open than yours.
I can't say which would be better optically, the larger objective of the 4200 might negate some advantage gained by the 6500's 30mm tube or lens construction.
