Why is this scope so much cheaper than the 2.5-10-40 4200 Bushy, and how close are these scopes to my 3-9-40 Zeiss conquest?  Thanks in advance....I need to pick up a new scope and if I could save $100 dollars by buying this Bushy 3-9-40 (compared to the zeiss), it would make my wife alot happier...    It is going on a Weatherby Vanguard .308 ( not alot of money but it shoots very well).  It is my secondary rifle but I want the glass to match the rifle's capabilities.   Primarily used for deer, hogs and coyotes...80 yards to 250 max...thanks again

It is less money than the rest of the 4200 scopes because it uses a less expensive 3x zoom erector instead of the usual 4x zoom erector found on the rest of the 4200 series.  IE: 4-16 is a 4x zoom ration and 3-9 is a 3x zoom ratio.  It uses the same glass and coatings as the other 4200 scopes and could be considered the "new" best scope for the money.

The main reason Bushnell made a 3-9 4200 was so that they could compete head to head against other 3-9 scopes.  Other manufacturers would do comparison test of 3-9 scopes and would always use the Elite 3200 3-9 as the Bushnell entry and of course it would come up short against the higher quality 3-9's.

Bushnell has also been getting beat pretty badly in sales lately and had to do something to react to the competition.  It would not be feasible to lower the prices of the entire 4200 line, so they just introduced a new model that cost them less to produce.

Bushnell Elite 4200 3-9x40.....$298.95

Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40.....$399.95

What Chris said. I have oftern found that since 3-9 is usually the most popular magnification range you can find the best deal with that type of scope.

As for the Bushnell 4200 vs the Conquest.  Last year I bought a 4200 2.5-10 and a 3-9 Conquest.  I took both of them out (no scientific study here) and went out to the vinyard in the evening.  I bought the 4200 for my dad and I picked up the Conquest.

Let me say both a very very nice scopes.  With the sun up there really wasn't much of a difference.  As the sun went down, again not a real difference.  When it got pretty much dark the Zeiss pulled in more noticable amount of light.  Both scopes would allow you to shoot well past normal hunting hours.

When it was getting dark and both scopes set at 3x I was able to see (Clearly) a jackrabbit in the vinyard out at approximately 100 yards that was no longer visible to the naked eye (I have 20/20 vision) .

If you could afford the Zeiss go for it.  If you want to save a $100 in the difference the 4200 is one Heck of a scope and very close to the Conquest in my opinion.

I can understand the thought process behind wanting a higher grade 3-9 to fill that segment of the market. What I don't completely understand is what that will do for the 3200 3-9 sales with only a $20 price difference between a 4200 and a 3200 3-9, not to mention the sales of the 4200 2.5-10. It's not like the 2.5-10 4200 is a sales dog. In fact, they were going out of Kansas as fast as they were coming in, unless that has changed. There are a few other minor differences between the 3-9 and 2.5-10 4200, but the biggest difference is the erector assembly as Chris mentioned.

Hello Roy

The 3200 3-9 goes for about $189 to $198 in alot of places I shop.

The best price I have seen on the 4200 3-9 so far is $279.00 to $289.

Both are exellent scopes for the money.

I was going by the prices listed here for both scopes with the ballistic plex reticle which, so far, is the only reticle offered in the 4200 3-9x40.

I am waiting anxiously for that Elite 4200 3-9x40 with Ballistic reticle.

I've been very impressed with Elite 4200 glass and the 3-9x40 is also a fair bit smaller and lighter than their other offerings.

ILya
