My Bushnell I had posted about hasn't fogged up yet. I am now wanting to test it somehow. It is attached to my .308 Encore barrel and I want to see if the scope has any leaks. Is there anyway I can test it without removing the scope from the barrel? Is there anyway I can do this without putting it in the frezer?

I guess you could field test it.....if it hasn't fogged it is probably sealed as the nitrogen is still in it.

30-06man,putting your barrel w/ scope in the freezer would work to detect leaks as it would fog up inside. If your really determined to test for leaks I believe I would put enough warm water in your bath tub so that when you carefully place your barrel/scope assembly in you can watch for a stream/streams of bubbles coming out of the scope. Good luck and let us know how you make out.

if it's cold outside, put in your truck/car truck overnight - bring it in your warm house and see if it holds fog. that's the easiest way, this time of year.

my 2 cents.

About 2 weeks ago I ordered a new 4200 3-9 and when it was delivered, I wasn't home and it sat outside for awhile...... it was very cold outside...... singe digits if I remember correctly.  When I brought it in the house it did NOT fog up like the Kahles CL I got a couple of days before that!  I thought that was pretty cool!  However, when I breathed on the 4200 (while it was still cold) it did fog up, but not very much and it went away pretty quickly.  I breathed on it like I was cleaning a pair of glasses...... put it right up to my mouth and did a deep breath......... kind of like making the "h" sound...... NOT like when you blow out a candle..... for whatever thats worth.

take em!

..................................................Very interesting! But not surprised!Elite....After I got my 3x9 4200 in last March, I stuck that scope in the freezer for 3 straight days. Then submerged it in a big pot of water held down by a dish for several hours. Then had it over a big boiling pot of water tied on a string about 18" over the pot for 1 hour!................NO PROBLEMS!!! NO INTERNAL FOGGING! NO LEAKS! NO LENS DISTORTIONS!!! Zip, Zero, Nada!!!........................

Hey squeeze if that string had broke you would have REALLY tested it! I have tried to make a rainguard scope fog to the point where I couldn't use it and have never managed to. Thats why I just put a 3x9 on my go to bad weather deer rifle. Best optics in the world aren't worth a fig if they are fogged from leaning against your body or a temp variation when the big ol' racker comes steppin' out.

...........................I made sure that the string was very secure!! I tied the string to the stove overhang which is directly over one of the burners that the pot sat on. You`re right though! Boiling water would have been one helluva test. I`ll pass on trying that one.............It would be interesting to see, what percentage of success the Leupy VX1, 2 and 3 owners would have doing the same test???!!!!....................As you say though, the best, brightest, the clearest optics aren`t worth a damn if you can`t see what you`re shooting at, OR if there is any delay in clearing the distortions, then shooting afterwards. You can lose a trophy that way!................I want three things from my rifles & optics. Quickest possible handling when needed. Quickest possible target acquistion when needed. And the best possible accuracy............I`ll do the rest!

I couldn't do that to a scope. Boiling water? It would worry be too much. I took some ice water and I submerged both ends of the scope around the bell and then after it got good and cold I put it in warm water. No leaks but I am about sure that old Buckmasters did. I might be sending it back.
