Welcome Sput, The main difference is purely optical clarity. If being able to count points on a set of antlers way out ther is important to you. Spend the extra $ and you will not be dissapointed. The 4200 series is considered by many the best buy at a affordable cost.

Check this out   http://www.riflescopes.com/products/421636M/bushnell_1.5-6x3 6_elite_4200_rifle_scope.htm

The difference between a 3200 and a 4200 is the optical quality and durability. The 3200's are "recoil rated at 1000 rds of 375 H&H" and the 4200's are rated at 10,000 rds. With the exception of the 3-9x40, all the 4200's have a 4 times zoom erector assembly as well. The difference in optical quality is very noticeable to my eyes.

As Roy said, there is a significant step up in quality between the two.

I bought my first 4200 after reading all the recommendations from this board and I am completely satisfied with it. I have put about 500 rounds out of my 22-250 and have never had to adjust the zero since I first sighted it in. The clarity is better than I expected. I have learned get the best you can afford it will make you a happy shooter.

As far as I am concerned the Elite 4200 series of scope will compete with anything on the market, period.  Spend as much as you want and the incremental increase in optic quality is nill.  The 3200 series is seriously close to the 4200 scopes from the ones I have purchased.  So, if you want to save some cash, get the 3200 series and do not worry about it.  The only thing that bothers me, is that the 3200 series advertises a screwed in and sealed reticle.  I am not sure about the 4200 series.  I would really like to see an etched reticle for as much money as the 4200 series charges.   But, for the optic quality, I quess I could forgoe that.

I like larger objectives for a brighter image in low light. I would take the 50MM.

40mm or 50mm

Personally, I on a bench gun I like 50mm objectives if I am using it out in the field I prefer a 40mm objective the amount of low light performance will be minimal with only the real difference being at higher magnifications. For me the trade off of having to mount the scope with higher rings, which changes the feel of the gun to me and the extra weight is not worth it.

Plus a good quality scope such as the 4200 Elite that your looking at will pull in plenty of light for hunting at dawn and dusk with a 40-42mm objective.

I would go 40. Not enough benifit to justify the increase in cost. The 4200 will most likely be as bright as you'll ever need it to be.

I would like to add that I have found the 3200 to be a very nice scope as well. Even though the 4200's are my favorites the 3200's are a hard value to beat under $200

Great choice on the 4200 I personally have owned about every model of scope in the 4200 line except the 1.5-6 and would seriously take a good look at the 4200 3-9X40.

Every state has different laws when it comes to shooting hours.  If your state allows more than 30 min. after sunset, I would pick the 4200 in 50mm without question.  At about 45-50 min. after sunset you need all the light and resoultion you can get.
