Price is one of the differences.  Optical performance is what you get for the difference in price.  The Elites were well-corrected for most optical aberrations.  The E2s were less so.  You would likely notice quite a bit of reduction in both resolution and contrast in the E2.

Thank you .Does the E1s hold up well under fair to rough handling such as hunting and climbing.

I saw and handled them several years ago, but I can't remember finding any real weaknesses in the design.

If you are looking for a good performer in that price range (800-1000), that is exceptionally durable, you should look at the Meopta Meostar line.

In fact there is a 10X42 Cabelas-branded Meopta on the samplelist for $599.

http://www.samplelist.com/Meopta-Cabelas-Euro-10x42-Binoculars-DEMO-B-P2025.aspx

They are optically excellent, and their build quality is as good or better than the tanks of the binocular world:  Swarovski SLCneu and Leica Trinovid.

I put mine through some God-awful abuse.  I have never heard a whisper of a durability problem with Meopta.

Is the new Bushnell Elite 10x42 with ED glass (not the EII 10x42 without ED glass)  just as good as the older Elite 10x43?

This 10x43 Elite got very good reviews at http://allbinos.com/140-binoculars_review-Bushnell_Elite_10x43.html

The 10x43 Elite costed over twice as much as 10x42 Elite ED.I think the 10x43 now is discontinued.
