Looking for another long range target/prairie dog/F-class scope.  This is what I currently have in higher powered scopes in order of clarity.
1.  Swarovski 6-18x50 TDS
2.  Zeiss Conquest 6.5-20 Varmint Z
3.  Nikon Moncarch 6.5-20 fine
4.  XOTIC 4-16x56 (Big, good on BMG)
5.  Leupold VX-III 4.5-14x50 LR, 6.5-20x50 LR both varmint, VARI X-III 4.5-14x50 LRT mildot
6.  Bushnell 3200 7-21 mildot(great for its price)

How would the 6500 compare?  Is the mil-dot a true mil-dot?  How is the DOA 600 reticle?  Compared a Leupold 8.5-25 varmint to the Swarovski one time and even though it had higher power the Leupold was no where near as clear and much harder to make out long range prairie dogs, will the 6500 be ok, otherwise I am looking at getting another conquest.
thanks

The 6500 is a true mil dot but it is not a first focal plane scope, rather a second focal plane, which means mil dot ranging is only easily done at one magnification, in the case of the 6500, at 10X.
Is this a big deal? depends how far you are shooting, how small is the target, how flat your rifle shoots and how much is unknown distances. I really like my 4-30x50 6500 and think it is a step up from other Bushies as long as you accept that a $700 (street price) scope will not equal a $2-3000 one.
I would opine there are very few situations where a 50mm objective is needed and a 40mm will give you a lower mounting which is important on a bolt gun but means little on an AR as all mounts are high. I would add the 6.5-20x40 Leupold VX III 30mm tube model to your list as it has lots of excellent features and can be mounted low (on a bolt gun) for excellent cheek weld.

The 3 leupolds (over 10 power)that I already own are all 30mm tube, and I am fairly happy with them, but the clarity isn't up to the Swaro and Zeiss.  I wish the conquest was made in a 25ish power range, make the decision much easier.  THere are 2 elites in my inventory now and they are both really good for budget optics, had a new monarch 6-24x50 last year and was very disappointed in it and sent it packin.  The old Monarch was much better in the field than the new one.  Wish I could borrow a 6500 for a week or two to give it a shake down.
