I'm in the market for a spotting scope that will be used mostly for shooting holes in paper, but also for limited hunting.  There are so many options out there so budget will be the first factor I guess.  I'd love to shell the bucks for a high end spotter from the big 3 but I'm really only wanting to spending around 500.00.  I found a new Bushnell Elite 20-60X80  for around 450.00.  Its the straight model.  I read somewhere that the straight scopes don't tend to have as good as an image as the angled versions.  Is this true?  Should I pass on this one and wait to find an angled version.  I know the angled versions are more ergonomic than the straights but its a good deal on this scope I think.  Any pointers or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I think you will find it difficult to shoot holes in paper with a spotting scope. Big%20Grin

That is a fabulous price for this scope.  The cheapest I ever found it was $650.  Are you sure it's new?

Pure hogwash.  Actually, although I doubt any human being could legitimately see the difference, the angled version of any given scope will be both dimmer and more prone to optical abberation than the straight version because it must use one additional prism to refract the light up into the angled eyepiece.

I will emphasize here that it is unlikely anyone could actual see this difference without the aid of very sophisticated measuring equipment.

Thanks for the input.  I went ahead and bought the scope.  465.00 plus shipping.  She said she only opened the box to take the picture.  Looks brand new to me.  I was bidding on two different scopes on ebay.  Lost the first one.  It ended up going for over 600.00.  Won the second for 465.00.  Guess I'll see how good a deal I got.  There's another one there ending in a few days.  Bidding is at 315.00.  Says it's like new.

Anyone  have a recommendation on a nice sturdy table top tripod?  I have a heavy duty Bogen I use for photography.  I need something for when I'm shooting off the bench.  I might end up building my own if I can't find something sturdy enough that is store bought.

Good deal on the Bushnell.  Mine was purchased the same way for a similar price.  I feel that these spotters are underrated.
