Any opinions on the above scope for deer and antelope hunting?

I live in Eastern Montana and most of the areas I hunt the terrain is mostly open prairies.  This makes for some long shots, and my 3-9 Buckmaster just didn't seem to cut it.

I am thinking about buying a Bushnell 6-24x40 Elite 4200 Mil Dot and putting it on my new Kimber Montana in .243. (Christmas Present ) I will also be using it for coyotes and maybe prairie dogs.

You guys think this is a wise choice?  If not, do you have any suggestions for a better scope around the same price ($400)

Thanks,

Tim

The only thing i dislike is the length. I have a 4200 4-16 on one of my rifles. You might consider one of those.

6-24x42 is a bit of an overkill.  COnsider something of a 4-16x40 or 3-12x40 variety.  ELite 4200 is a great scope for the money. and their 4-16x40 is very good.

Another thing to consider is that since you moving up to better glass even at the same magnification you'll see quite a bit better in an Elite 4200 (or any of a bunch of similar scopes) than in you Buckmaster.

I was thinking about the 4-16x40 but I couldn't find any with a mil dot.  Do they make them?

Bushnell does not make a 4-16 with a mildot installed, you can however get a mildot reticle installed by bushnell for 50 dollars.

Why do you need a Mil-Dot reticle on a hunting scope?

If you need a holdover reticle Burris Ballistic Plex is a better choice.

Because I know how to use it.  I have 2 other scopes with Mil Dot reticles, and the only scope I have without it is the one I am replacing.  I wouldn't want to have to learn and or have to get used to a new system.

OK, that makes sense.  I bought my Elite 4200 with a MilDot as well mostly because I am used to it and I have several scopes with it.

Unofrtunately Elite 4200 4-16x40 does not come with a Mil-Dot.  There are other scopese you can consider, such Burris Signature Select, Pentax Lightseeker, Leupold VX-III. and Sightron S2 which are available with a MilDot reticle.  Personally I am partial to Burris and SIghtron scopes.
