I have decided to purchase a Bushnell 4200 in 4x16x40 or Zeiss Conquest in 4.5x14x44. How do these two models of scopes compare to one another? Which is the best scope in terms of (1)durability, (2) optics quality, and (3)overall value . I am looking for a scope that will give you years of service and not leave you holding the bag if you get that once in a lifetime shot . Any information or advice will be greatly appreciated.

The Zeiss is a higher quality scope and has the side adjustments vs the objective adjustment on the Bushnell.  The Elite is very good and cost less.  If money is not an issue get the Zeiss.  If money is part of the equation, the Elite is a scope that will serve you well.

A couple of days away form my PC and someone finally asked for this comparison. Sorry to disappoint you Cory, but, I am not going to get into a long winded debate on two scopes that are excellent. Who would expect anything less from a Zeiss product. HOWEVER, if ranburr is going to make a definitive statement that the Zeiss is a higher quality scope, I would like to know what facts, specs, tolerances, materials from ocular to objective on both scopes to make such a bold blanket statement like that. I had a brief opportunity to look through the Zeiss of topic and from a optics standpoint, the Zeiss was excellent. Unfortunately, I did not have a chance to view the Elite for a side to side comparison. The side focus is more user friendly, even if the turret caps were made of plastic instead of aluminum. The only other complaint I had that was shared by all who peered  through the 4.5-14 Zeiss was that the eye relief was very critical. At first I thought that maybe the scope was set at the top end of the power range. It was not. As for the Elite, as I have stated many times before, it has advantages as a hunting scope(Rainguard/FireFly reticle) that the Zeiss, or any other scope for that matter, does not have. Unless I do not understand the full meaning of VALUE, and I think I do, the Elite would get the nod. But, as ranburr and Cory stated, if price is not a factor,( the Zeiss is approx. $250 more expensive) the Zeiss is a tad sharper than the Elite and the Elite is a tad brighter than the Zeiss, in my opinion. I hope this does not send ranburr running for a bottle of nitro pills!!!!!

What do you want this scope to do primarily?  What will you be using it for?

I will be using the scope primarily for deer hunting. I want a scope that will take the rigors of a mountain hunt if necessary and have the quality of optics that will enable a hunter to shoot accurately early or late if needed . Which of the two scopes (Elite or Zeiss) do you feel would be the best choice for me?

They are very close with the optical edge going to the Zeiss.  The Elite goes down lower in power and up higher in power with its 4x erector (4-16 vs. 4.5-14), the Elite has rainguard which is huge for mountain hunts when weather changes rapidly.  I've seen scopes and binoculars fog externally ten times a day in the mountains....but not an Elite.  They are both very durable with neither really out doing the other.  Side focus knobs are more prone to damage than adjustable objective scopes when dropped.  Both have lifetime warranties (Zeiss' is transferable).  Elite has one year money back guarantee if you don't like it.  Elite comes with a sunshade and a free $99.95 gear bag too.

The Zeiss is a better scope optically but just a tad.  The Elite has more benefits and is by far a better value.

If you get the Zeiss get the plex version with standard adjustments instead of the exposed target knobs.
