I have looked through a few different Elite 4200 series scopes and have been impressed with the optical quality for the price.  However, I've never looked through a 6x24 model with mil-dot reticle.  Anybody here have some experience with this particular scope?  I can get a slightly used one at a good price (under $300).  My intended application(s) would be to mount it on a custom build that I'm putting together right now.  Here are the specs:

1) Stevens 200 action;

2) Lothar Walther 28" Varmint Contour barrel in .260 Remington;

3) SSS custom trigger;

4) SSS custom recoil lug;

5) Stockade Varmint/Tactical stock;

6) Warne one-piece picatinny base

I want to use the rig for target shooting out to 600yds and as a "powerline" hunting rifle for whitetail, hogs, etc.  There are some spots on our property that present 200-500yd shots and I want a rifle & scope setup that will give me the opportunity to take an ethical shot.

Thanks for the help/advice!

I am sure you are not looking for my recommendations, but as a long range shooter, I do not think even at that distance 24 power is necessary, but will come in handy.  I have never looked through that particular scope.  I have the Elite 4200 4x16 50mm and it is perfect.  I am using it this year to shoot out to 900 yards for whitetail and seems quite adequate.  Only problem is, while I have sighted the rifle and have taken aim at distances up to 900 yards, I have not taken a shot with a rangefinder, ballistics calculator and adjusting the elevation.  Sounds like you are putting together a nice set-up in a nice caliber.  I hope everything works out well.

I have that scope (the AO version, not the side-focus one) on my 22-250 varminter.

You will be happy with it.

I have heavy savages with the Accu-trigger,Savage shooters supply,and Canjar set triggers. I am of the belief that the Canjar is not only the best feeling but also the most usefull. The reason for this is that it can be used as a standard hunting trigger, or be set and release on just a few onces. I also have a Bushnell 4200 6x24-40 Mil-dot,not side focus, on a bvss in 25-06. This is the most accurate weapon I own. The 87g TNT is dead on at 200 yards, and 2 mils low at 400. You would be well served by your choice of scope.  Also if at all possible try using Burris signature zee rings with the ecentric inserts. They will allow you to roughly zero the scope while keeping the windage and elevation adjustments very close to centered.

Couldn't be further from the truth!  I am looking for suggestions/opinions and I value yours just as much as anybody elses.  You also have first-hand experience with the the 4200 and I really do appreciate you trying to help me out.

I'm leaning pretty heavily toward this scope.  Only things that is sort of holding me up is the availability of side focus (I know this is a recent development for this line of scopes).  I LOVE having side focus on my IOR and Kahles but haven't spent much time with a scope that uses the front objective.  Is there much of a difference from an ease-of-use standpoint?  Is the side focus feature worth $489 vs. $295 (price I'd be getting the scope)?

Thanks a ton guys!
