I just picked up a bushnel banner dusk & dawn 3x9x50 and I like it.. It just seem's much more clear then the 40mm ( I am a noob at this so dont take my advice just yet wait for more people to help ya out) Wink. I know the scope I got is cheap but it does the job at the range I shoot at max is 300 rds but I pretty much shoot at 100 and 200 and it worked out fine untill my mount broke.. but I just picked up new mounts and rings (weaver) and they are pretty nice as for the rings I got the Quad Lock.. very nice imo..

But I dont go hunting or anything I live in Hawaii so the scope and mounts for my R700 are fine..  I just go to the range once a week and target shoot this is more of a hobbie to me then anything..

if you are set on a 2.5-10 why don't you just get the 4200 in 3-9x40 and save over 100 bucks?  I wouldn't get the 2.5-10 unless you went with the 50mm objective.  The difference in the two objectives will be about 1 magnification level.  The brightest power on the 40 will be about 6x and on the 50 7x.

Thats the deal, we need to pick an average exit pupil size and for most it will be about 6mm, the 50mm allows you to utilize about 6.7 power while the 50mm will allow about 8.3 power without exceeding your eye exit pupil. Its not that the 50mm makes it brighter it just sometimes gives a larger "sweetspot" and allows the use of more magnification at a given light level. Of course extra magnification will bring an object closer and hence seem to make it easier to see also in a given light level. Holding the rifle steady with that extra power level can be another story all together.....

I agree with cheaptrick.....the 2.5x10's are taking over the old 3x9 spot as the popular "do most anything" hunting scope. The 3x9 4200 is a great deal while they last, but they are pretty much on the way out and will be replaced by the 2.5x10. Save money while you can if 40mm is your choice but it will be for a limited time. The 2.5x10 however will give you less and more power range just for added money.

The 4200 in the 3x9 will work just fine and be just as clear as the 50mm objective!!...When comes down to actual hunting, the 50mm 2.5x10 will not bring home any extra meat or trophies!! The 50mm also adds weight to the rifle, costs more and has a higher profile! The 40mm to 44mm objective simply looks better on any bolt rifle!..............For the money, the 3x9 4200 is the best choice,,while they last!!!.......If you can`t accomplish what you wish in the field with a 3x9, you sure as_______won`t be able to with a 2.5x10 either!!!
