I recently purchased my first hunting rifle a 300 win mag.  I am close to buying a bushnell elite 4200 after reading all the information here.   I have it narrowed down to the 3-9x40 and the 2.5-10x40.  My question is the 2.5-10x with firefly worth the extra $100 premium over the newly introduced 3-9x.

Your opinions are appreciated...

Save your money and buy the 3-9x40. In most states, legal hunting hours are 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset. With a good scope like the 4200, I doubt you will need an illuminated reticle to take any deer during legal hours. The exception might be if you routinely hunt in heavy cover. Take the money you save to buy more ammo to practice with.

I have the 2.5-10 and I like the magnification range it provides.  The firefly while a cool option for the most extreme situation is not really necessary since the scope pulls in plenty of light for legal shooting hours.  Is it worth it?  Well that depends if you have the extra $100 to spend. Or, if that once in a lifetime shot provides its self in very low light situations and you cant see the cross hairs.  Again, that may never present itself but if it did it sure would be nice to see the cross hairs to make the shot.

I like my scopes with the lowest possible magnification when possible is a .5 power a big difference? Not really but I still like having it.  If it is a stretch to pay the extra money then, I'd say no the 3-9 is great way to go, you won't be dissappointed and as Dave said you can buy extra ammo and practice.  On the other hand if you dont mind spending the $100, then go for it then you got a great scope with the nifty firefly and a wide magnification range.

just my 2 cents

Happy shooting

AC

I have the 4200 2.5-10x40, 4200 3-9x40, and 3200 3-9x40. Someone please correct me if im wrong but it looks like the new 4200 3-9x40 is the 3200 3-9x40 tube with 4200 glass. I haven't done alot of testing but the 2-4200's don't seem different optically. You can tell a difference between the 3200 and 4200 3-9 though.

I have owned a bunch of other scopes and personally don't think you could do better than the 4200 3-9X40 for the money. The next best deal is probably the zeiss conquest for $399 I own one and it's very nice although not buch better than the elite and it doesn't have rainguard, which I can't believe how well it works.

I have a 3200 1.5-4.5 scope with the fire-fly on my encore BP and while it's pretty cool, I honestly haven't used it and don't see where I ever would.
