Hi all - I just received a new Burris Tac30 scope in 3-9x40, and right away took it out of the box. I have a Burris Euro Diamond that I am comparing it to right now, and I do not see a difference between the two: it is very, very clear, the discrimination is excellent (fine lines at a distance), and there does not appear to be significant distortion or optical artifacts when you move from the center to the edges. The coloring is uniform, between neutral and slightly warm, across the glass. Contrast is vivid - that worries me just a touch because my experience is that high contrast in normal light sometimes means less performance in low light. I am not able to check for flare right now due to the light conditions.

This appears to be very good Japanese glass to my eye. I am really impressed! The glass is really outstanding -not Swarovski or Kahles outstanding, but top-notch mid-range outstanding:-) I should emphasize that this is all very preliminary, and that in now way am I doing a formal test. First impressions only... In the next few days (well, when I have the time) I will do a deeper eval, and I will compare it to a VX3 to see how it fares. Based on what I saw today, I am expecting that it will be solidly in the same class, at least optically.

The mechanicals are good, but not as impressive as the glass - just good, I'd say very comparable to an old FullField II. While it offers a good touch, it does not have the same positive feel as the Euro Diamond, which, in my opinion, is not as firm and secure Leupold VX3 or Bushnell 6500 Elite. I am not disappointed here, but neither am I raving.

As for the eye relief (that was my worry about this scope), using my Polish Measuring Caliper (my hand) it looks like it never gets any shorter than 3.5" at any magnification, maybe a bit more. But to make sure I'll have to mount it, which will take a few weeks.

PS - I am 1/8th Polish - I can afford Polish jokes:-)

I just talked to Burris to verify my impressions on glass and mechanicals. They told me that that the mechanicals are the same class as the FF2, very mid range, but that the glass and coatings are the same as Euro/ Black Diamond (their best glass).

I tried the illuminated reticle at dusk - I was able to adjust it low enough to make it very usable. w/o losing my night vision and ability to see a dark background. I used very dark tree trunks in a shaded forest as a target.

When I have a chance I'll do a glass comp with my Kahles 3x9. I already know which will win (:-)  but I am curious of the difference.
