Picked up a new Nikon monarch 4-16 mildot. Love the scope.

It is going on top of a LA savage. Went with a millett base and a set of burris tactical rings.

The base measures within spec, at the widest part it is .840

When measuring the rings at the same place all the way closed I am getting a reading of .880 so they are not closing enough on the rail to keep the scope tight.

Just wondering if anyone has ever had any problems with the Burris xtreme tactical rings, these are 1" and low in height. I sent an email off to burris to see what they would like me to do to troubleshoot the problem or figure out if they are out of spec.

It's kind of hard to explain, but the measurements you took do not, (in and of themselves), prove incompatability between base and rings. The sharp edges along the sides of the base do not need to contact the corresponding vee-notches in the bases, if the clamping bosses pull the cross-lug down into the slot upon tightening the clamp nut. The underneath beveled surfaces of each part should tighten against one another, but the width is fairly irrelevent as you described it. I'm not saying you don't have a problem, just pointing out a quirk.....Wish I knew how to send a sketch to show what I mean.

Burris is taking care of me and sending me another set no questions asked.

Really nice to see that kind of customer service.

I will post back on the solution or problem.

Good for Burris'  Customer Service!  I'm really interested in what the problem is. Don't rule out Millet as the culprit, either. Who knows, the width might be okay, but the angles milled too steep or too shallow.  ALSO, I really am not sure about this, but I believe that there are some dimensional differences between a true Weaver spec base and a true Picatinny spec base.  Although they are usually interchangeable, there may be a gap in allowable manufacturing tolerances that you may have been unfortunate enough to fall through. Be sure to check into this aspect of the situation if the new Burris rings fit the same as your old ones.( The Millet base manufactured to Picatinny standards, the Burris rings to Weaver standards or vice/versa.) I'll bet a dollar that the new Burris rings will fit the same as your old ones did, but there is a chance that you just got a set of lemon rings

HI

Millett maintains the diamensions on the picitinny rails to within .005 on the angles and width.   And yes the dimentions of Weaver and Picitinny are different over all they are within range of most rings.   One of the biggest differences is the slot of the rail on bases.  The Picitinny is wider then the weaver.   Most rings are made to work on ether base.

If you have further problems please contact Millett and we will see what we can do for you.

Good shooting

Steve

Thank you for that info, Steve. I remember seeing a shop drawing comparing the dimensions, angles, etc of the two systems. I know there are differences, but couldn't recall what they are. I wish SAAMI would declare one a standard and retire the other to complete obsolescence. I hate "close-but-not-quite-the-same-as"  issues that could easily be completely standardized within the industry. It's generally the result of some upstart manufacturer taking a proven system, and changing it to fit his idea of an "improvement".  Nine times out of ten all he did was to make it "different, not better", and complicate and confuse the industry in the process. I could give a hundred examples in every field of human endeavor I've ever been involved in.

Sorry. Rant over. I feel better now....
