I looked at the Burris website today and ... behold... the 2009 information is up.

I was looking for a “do-all” scope that I could use with my air rifle as well as with my centerfire plinkers (9mm, and 30-30).  Unfortunately, the compact R/A line appears to have disappeared along with the HBR II).

As far as I can tell, the only Burris scopes with Parallax Adjustment to under 10 yards have been downgraded to the “Timberline” group.  Burris’ website notes: “Timberlines are the most affordable Burris scopes ever offered.”  Only a few years ago, it was one of the “Specialty” scopes still made in the US (yes, I know that it was made in the Philippines more recently).

I had hoped to get a high quality, small scope, preferably made in the US.  My absolute max price is $300.  At the moment, I am pretty annoyed with Burris.  I am deciding whether it is worth the trouble to keep a watch on EBay for a used or New-Old-Stock Compact R/A (one of the US-manufactured ones) or to say phooey on Burris and get something else.

I had wanted a US-made scope as opposed to an “outsourced” one.  Reason: My former employer was recently purchased by a Chinese company.   Most of the US workforce was laid-off as production moved to China..

Boo Hoo

Enough of my rant.  I have three questions:

1) Was the US-made Compact R/A really worth the $300+ dollars?  Was it really in the same league or close to the Signature line?  Should I even bother to keep looking for one?

2) What is the consensus on the Burris “Timberline” scopes?  Would the new 4-12x32 AO scope at less than $200 still be a waste of money?

3) Would the Weaver RM 3-9x32 AO be a much smarter buy?  Would it survive use on my centerfire carbines?

I purchased a Burris Compact 4-12x32AO scope about four years ago from SWFA with a Mill-Dot Reticle. As I recall, it cost $325.

Mine is excellent with very good to excellent resolution throughout the magnification range, although I generally leave it on 12x (for spotting purposes). It's on a Ruger K77/22 with a standard barrel, triger has been modified to aprox 2.5# pull. At 50 yards this rifle/scope combination shoots average 5 round (out to out) sub 1" groups that can be covered by a quarter. Better groups are nickle size and best groups are well under a dime (7/16"). No 3/8" (out to out) groups yet. Best groups with either the new "Ely, Target" or "Aguila Match, Rifle". My scope always holds zero and has precise windage and elevation adjustments - required for every ammo for best accuracy. The Mill-Dot reticle is sort of silly on a 22lr, but it looks kind of cool. Would I do it again (repurchase the Burris 4-12x32AO) - absolutely. Mine is a great scope.

This scope is still available (elsewhere) for $385 without the silly Mill-Dot. Maybe I'll get another, while they are still available, just in case I run accross a Remington 504?

I can not help you regarding the quality of the new "Timberline"? It would be nice if it had the same quality as mine, but...
