I have searched quite a bit for a long range scope will mil dot reticle for my Remington .308 SPS Tactical AAC-SD.  I am leaning toward purchasing the Burris 6-24X50 XTR.  I can get a discount on this scope and buy it for about $840.  Originally my budget max was around $750 and as normal, i've already blown past it.  I have given consideration to the Vortex Viper PST's, Sightron SIII, and the SWFA SS 5-20X50.  I have a couple Leupold VX-3's and want something that will measure up to them or surpass it in optic quality/clarity....  will the Burris XTR do that for me?  I am concerned about the clarity as higher power, is the quality going to be there with the Burris?  I've read on another thread that the Vortex PST loses a little clarity after 18X, which concerns me with the Vortex?  Any bits of advice regarding the Burris, Vortex, SWFA, etc would be greatly appreciated.  I plan to order tomorrow morning!  Thanks!!!

I bet the glass on the Burris is a bit below your Luppy's. And Burris also has the reputation of not having a lot of internal adjustment. The reviews of the PST's I have read compare the glass as equal the Mark 4, or older MarkIII. But for price the price you get decent glass, matching turrets/reticle, and illumination...Cheaper than the Burris with mil-reticle/MOA turrets... http://swfa.com/Vortex-6-24x50-Viper-PST-30mm-Rifle-Scope-P44563.aspx

And the SS 5-20 really smokes the Luppy's...And right now with the group but going you can get a non-illuminated ret. for $1049...Just saying.

Clarity is a tough term in optics.  Clarity doesn't describe something, it describes a lack of something.

In my experience with the 4-16 PST, it does NOT lose resolution at high power.  It still resolves detail quite well.  It does lose some contrast, which makes it seem dimmer to some people, and "washed out" to others.

I actually think that the image is still pretty good at max power, but it doesn't pop with color like some other scopes.  One really nice feature with the Vortex is the forgiving eyebox with long and constant eye relief.

That said, the S3 and SS have excellent reputations for providing extremely high quality images at high magnifications.

I am quite interested in both, myself.

I was wondering about this...  I can't seem to find how much internal adjustment the Burris has.  In the documentation it says the target knobs have enough movement for 100-1000 yards, but it doesn't say how many clicks that is.

vortex also has the best warranty and customer service in the industry.

but the SS 5-20 is bad ass, my only issue with it. is the reticle covers a groundhog at 1k. but beggars cant be choosers. the burris isn't anywhere near the SS, for an extra $200 that would be my choice. i'd be all over the S3 if the mil/mil had a better reticle.

but the PST would be a solid choice

OK, I'm giving serious consideration to the Sightron S3.  Prob gonna stick to the 6-24X cause I'm concerned with the 8-32X losing quality on high power.  The following two are the one's I'm looking at.  It looks like the only difference is one has target knobs and the other tactical knobs.  I'm not the most savvy when it comes to the fine details of scopes.  Can anyone tell me the difference?  I assume that one click on the target knobs it prob 1/4" at 100 yards and does 0.1 mrad per click mean that 10 clicks would be move it one whole dot on the mil dot reticle at 100 yards?  Thanks for any direction!
