Any thoughts on using a Burris 4X Short Mag for a CAR-15?

I have a Burris 4x20 Compact (a Short Magnum is the same scope with a different label) and I am very happy with it.

The 4x24 IOR is a very nice scope, but its reticle moves when you adjust W/E, so if you want you reticle in the center of the filed of view, you will often need adjustable mounts.

Anyhow, these scopes compete in very different markets.   If you want an IOR scope targeted at the same general market as the Burris 4x20, then take a look at IOR Hunting 4x32 which is a great little scope (more expensive though).

There may be one or two out there, but I am working on that

On a more serious note, I actually do not own all that many scopes (I think I have about 20 or so right now), however, I like to tinker with them, so a lot of scopes go through my hands.

The issue that I had with a short mag
201331 Burris 3-9x32 Short Mag Rifle Scope Burris 3-9x32 Short Mag Rifle Scope
  • Matte
  • Ballistic Plex
  • 1"
is that if you set the power range up around 6 to 7 or above it was not useable in the field the eye relief was such a narrow distance front to back. What it looked like was like looking through fog. At three power it performed OK but balistic plex only works at the highest power so the scope wouldnt do what it was designed to do. Also I had a Burris pistol scope
200309 Burris 3-12x32 Handgun Scope Burris 3-12x32 Handgun Scope
  • Matte
  • Ballistic Plex
  • 1"
  • Adjustable Objective

I had a similar problem with eye relief being totally unusable over about 6x. You could not hold it at the arm extended position it had to be closer than that to be useable eye relief but if you had it on a .308 or 45-70 encore pistol that was just asking to catch the whole rig in your face. Both scopes made trips back to Burris who offer the worst customer service on the face of the earth. Ultimately I got rid of both scopes. The only Burris I own is a 1x short mag that is on my Encore 45-70 pistol and it has held up quite well. However two out of three is not good odds and while I am sure that Burris makes some quality products like their Signature and Euro lines I have been in a store and seen a new Fulfield II litterely come apart just by changing the  power from 4-14.

A fixed power would likely hold up but if you want to put something besides an EOTech or Aimpoint on a CAR 15 that sounds tactical to me and I would use something tactical like an IOR 6x42  but the IOR 4x32 is eaven less money, I could suggest something more expensive but I know what a struggle it is to afford good optics.

604230 IOR 6x42 Tactical 30mm Rifle Scope IOR 6x42 Tactical 30mm Rifle Scope
  • Matte
  • MP-8
  • 30mm
  • Free 2.5" Sun Shade w/ Purchase
