I recently put a Burris 2x-7x 32mm w/ballistic plex on my Ruger Super Redhawk .454 casull.  I've been through 6 boxes of different ammo and still not liking my groups.  Finally settled on Winchester 260gr platinum tips - with a

9 1/2" barrel, using a bench rest, at 50 yds, shouldn't I be getting better than 6" groups???

While bore sighting the scope my windage adj. would max out until I'd adjust the elevation. Is that normal.  I can't seem to make any sense trying to fine tune the scope in the field... 4 clicks up sends my bullet 7" to the right.

Is it me? the scope? the ammo?

Sounds like the scope to me.
Maybe the mounts, but more likely the scope.
I'd give Burris service a call and see what they recommend.
I also have a 2-7 Burris that acted strange and they straightened me out over the phone. It had to do with the posi-lock.
Good Luck,

Something doesn't seem right about your mounts if you are at extremes regarding reticle zero. I would check them, also.

Regarding your groups, if you are using a sandbag or something similar for a rest, don't set your barrel on it. Set the frame. My Redhawk consistently shoots 4-5" @ 100 yards until I shot resting the barrel on the sand bag. My groups, if you can call them that, opened up to 1'. I went back to setting the gun on the sand bag at the front of the frame. My groups tightened back up again.

Weclome to O.T.

Thank you both for the info.  I called burris and tech support says I should start all over with the sighting in process.  I guess I'll try that.

Also, I HAVE been resting the barrel on the pistol rest, wouldn't think that would matter.  I will definately try the frame instead.  Thanks.

Just a heads up.
Resting the barrel or frame on a hard surface will cause the bullets to shift point of impact from shooting off hand. So as long as you allways shoot off a bench you will be fine, but if you later decide to shoot off hand or over a soft surface like a sand bag your point of impact will be different.

never was satisfied with my groups,  I used a bench just to sight it in & then free handed it.
Anyone have a preference in ammo for that gun?

I have a SRH 454 with 7-1/2" barrel, leupold 2x scope.  I currently reload with 250gr hornady xtp bullets over AA #9 at about 1625 fps. This load gives about 1.5" groups at 50 yds.

I used to shoot a lot of .454.  My favorite bullet by far was the Cast Performance 335gr WLNGC.  I used H110, can't remember exactly how much, but it was a reduced velocity load; at about 1150 fps.  I was able to shoot 2" groups at 50yds consistently, and I'm sure the gun and load could have done better.  I highly recommend cast bullets in the big pistols.  You get better velocity at lower pressure, great accuracy, and incredible knock down power (large meplat).  This load dropped 300lb hogs quicker than a 300 Mag.

I try to rest both wrists on something when shooting.  This leaves the pistol free to recoil naturally.  The above info on resting the barrel is true; stay away from that.

I agree with Mike about the cast performance solids being great bullets.  I use the 300 grain WFNGC in my 44 mag. using W296 powder.
