I am going to purchase a couple of Burris 1-5x24 XTR II's. One will go my 20" Colt AR15A2 Government Model in an ARMS #2 mount with ARMS #21 rings. The second on will go on my son's Colt 6920 M4 Carbine in a LaRue LT-104 mount. I am trying to decide which reticle to go with, the XTR II Ballistic 5.56 Gen 3 reticle or the XTR II Ballistic CQ Mil reticle. These are general purpose rifles for home defense, 3 gun matches, coyote hunting and plinking. What do you recommend and why. Thanks.

These are probably good scopes and If I were to pick one it would be the Gen 3 reticle.  Having said that the .223 is a relatively flat shooting cartridge for the first 300 yds after which it is the wrong choice of caliber and one is better off with a .243 or 30 cal rifle because they will retain more energy at long range.
I truely prefer to keep it simple when I am talking about a scope for an AR-15.  The scopes I have put on  my personal AR-15 and .223 cal bolt guns are these.

In the price range and style of scope you are looking at the Super Sniper s in the similar power range will be far more durable than the Burris.  Every Burris product I have owned has failed except one.

The choice of the reticle depends on whether you are going to be using the reticle for ranging or holdover.

The Ballistic 5.56 reticle is faster for ranging targets about the width of human shoulders and fits 5.56 trajectory adequately well.

The Ballistic CQ is a better general purpose reticle if you plan to range off of objects of varying size and for holdover with a variety of different cartridges.

If this scope is going to be exclusive to rifles chambered for 5.56x45 or 7.62x51 and the ranging is going to be done with a laser rangefinder of some sort, I would go with the Ballistic 5.56.  For the first 500 yards the trajectories of these two cartridges are pretty similar, so the holdovers will be decent.

The Ballistic CQ is designed for quick ranging of objects 18" in width and you can probably make it work on coyotes depending on how big they get in your area.

Personally, I am so used to the mil-scale for both ranging and holdover, that I would probably be inclined to use the Ballsitic CQ reticle.

Well yesterday I received a Burris 1-5x24 XTR II with the Ballistic Mil CQ reticle and I love the scope.
