I want to build a good long range varmit rifle in 22-250 or .222. I was wondering if anyone could tell me where i could get a good action and barrel.  it has to be a heavy barrel.

would also like any info on better calibers if there are any.

Are you looking for a Remington barreled action? Also, you can get a Howa ( Weatherby Vanguard ) from any fireams dealer in 223, 22-250 or 243. These have a great reputation for accuracy as does the Remington. Also, the Montanna Rifleman barreled action should be able to be ordered through any FFL.

I've got a Savage varmint in 22-250.  I bought the 12FV model with a heavy barrel and an Accu-trigger and all it needed was a better stock and a scope.  I ended up going the inexpensive way and getting a Choate Super Varmint stock.  For the optics setup I am using a Ken Farrell one-piece base and a Bushnell ELite 4200 6-24x40MD scope and the bloody thing shoots far better than I do on any given day.  So far I've only tried factory loads in it, but it shoots everything I tried MOA or better from the bench.

If youíre cheap like me, or a relatively inexperienced builder, surplus rifle actions can be the way to go. I have built several mauser varmints in .223 because of the cheap surplus ammo on the market. My last creation though is a yugo m24/47 that I picked up from classic arms, just google them and you will find his site. I picked up the gun for 130 bucks when it was all said and done.  I got a shilen contour #7 barrel from brownells for just under 200, which does require a bit of machining.  I topped it off with a picatinny base that I made out of titanium, a pair of max 50 rings from badger I lying around, and a SS10X42M. Once the McMillan is finally ready I'll let you know how it shoots. I haven't made a club yet with any of my surplus rifles though, they all shoot sub M.O.A. All in all, you can have a very serious competitor for under a grand if thatís what youíre shooting for. The only problem with the surplus rifles is that the resale value is fairly low. But, if you donít like the rifle you can always break it down, sell the parts, and actually make money off of the deal.

I'm having visions of a small CZ action and heavy fast twist .223 barrel.  That way I don't have mount wheels on it to take it to the back pasture

I am not sure what the .222 gets you anymore with all the load and bullet development for the .223.  Dad has a .22-250 that I suspect has bedding problems.  I've gotten bad hits from it and good hits from it. I can not blame that on the round itself, but given some of the bad hits, if I have to go to a bigger action, I'd think more about .243 unless you are selling pelts.

I want to see the impact, hence I stay away from 243 for varmints.  On a lighter gun, I'd go with a 223.  On a heavier gun I've gone with a 22-250.

I really like to use 03 actions, but they are getting expensive and collectible.  Find either an already "sporterized" 03 and break it down or get a Mauser 98.

If you're a reloader, consider the 22-250 Ackley Improved.  It will give you 200 fps velocity without burning near as much powder as a 220 Swift.  There's lots of good actions but I would definitely recommend a custom barrel with a

1 in 8" twist.  This will let you shoot bullets up to 80gr, but still shoots the smaller bullets fine.  the usual 1 in 14" twist of the 22-250 will not stabilize bullets over 55gr or so.

Check out your local pawn shops and pick up a whole M700 rifle and keep the action to have built.

If you want a 222, remington still makes entire gun for about $550 in their older BDL (which is almost the price of an action from some places). If you want a heavy barrel add about $200 to the project. 223 WSSM and a 22-250 use about the same amount of powder and will last about 1500 to 2000 rounds. A 233 will get 3600 fps with 40 grs and last forever (at least 5000). A .204 will get a 40 gr up to 4200 and I haven't worn mine out yet (at 2000 rd). If money isn't a problem, design the action with a longer action say a .308 length, to allow 70- 80 gr 22 cal bullets to be seated completely out in a 22-250 volume case, with a fast twist barrel as suggested previously. I can't believe some manufacture hasn't done this.
