Just got a Ruger American rifle in a .308, it has weaver bases included. Want to get a scope & rings for around $300
Would love to get something in a 18 or 24 with a 50mm, is this possible?

check out bushnell banner 6-18x50 if you are dead set on higher power. Most guys around here would most likley advise lower magnification and higher quality glass. Nikon prostaff, leupy vx1, burris FF, redfield revenge are all similar and good. I like the burris FF E1 the best for a budget scope.

Good luck

A "friend" told me you can get a "entry level" scope and some high end rings and do just as well.
He recommended a barska, they any good?

Thanks for the advice

i can't speak to barska... i personally like talley lightweights.  i will say that regardless of whether your rings are "high end" or not, the only really important thing about rings is that they hold their position, so your scope doesn't move, without putting too much pressure on the scope and constricting or damaging it's internal components.

take off the bases that came with the rifle and buy some talley 1 piece lightweights for 50$ and spend the other 250 on something like:

or

as someone else above me said, however, you'll be better served with less magnification and better glass than vice versa.  it doesn't matter that your scope goes to 18x if you you can't see anything clearly at or near max magnification.

Don't get a Barska, they are really cheap chicom junk, you will be disappointed.

I know this is not really what you are looking for, but I would highly recommend a 3-9x40ish scope.  For $300 you can get an excellent 3-9x scope that will serve you much better than a scope with a high end of 18x or 24x.  In your price range asking for a scope with that much magnification it is going to be lacking optically at those higher mags.  But at $300 you can get an excellent 3-9x scope.

Bushnell Elite, Vortex Viper, Meopta Meopro has one for $317 (http://swfa.com/Meopta-3-9x42-Meopro-Rifle-Scope-P53607.aspx)  Sightron S2, Leupold VX2.  Any of those would be a good scope for your price range.

Nice looking Burris 4.5-14 on the sample list at a price that ought to leave room for rings . I had one of these and it was a pretty nice scope.
