My 10 year old has done a great job learning iron sights over the last few years, so now it's time to graduate to optics. Looks like she's getting my 1x4 SWFA with Mil-quad/Mil turrets to start. This is going to make the gun even heavier though, so I'd like to be able to attach a bipod when she starts getting fatigued from positional shooting. This will make for longer, funner outings.

Looking for something less expensive than a $100 Harris. Will be used mostly for prone shooting position in sandy or grassy areas. Short and light would be nice, but I'm worried about her having to fight the side to side cant with a fixed model.

It's hard to research the cheaper bipods. Very frustrating. There are usually very limited descriptions/specs by the manufacturers. YouTube is swamped with "reviews" by people who seemingly buy cheap bipods because of how they look, seldom describing their functional use or attributes.

The rifle has the older quad rail handguard.

Anybody know of a budget bipod that would fit this application?

I went with a cheap bipod on a benchrest AR (10+ lbs of rifle). I chose the 6-9" Champion Pivot Traverse bipod, model 40635.

I guess my impromptu review is that it works fine. It's made in China using mystery metals. The castings for the locking wheels on the legs looks very rough. I set the height, locked the wheels, and it's been holding the rifle just fine for almost a year now. I do load the bipod and that hasn't been an issue either. My biggest complaint is the way the legs deploy. On this model the legs pull out, rather than spring out. Fully retracted is the "resting" state. Fully extended has a lock, so you just pull them out and they stay. But anything in between requires pulling the leg out and holding it as you tighten the lock wheel.

I probably wouldn't buy it again, but not because it's failing me or anything. I'd simply go for a model with spring out legs that doesn't traverse (traversing is wasted for my use). Maybe the Caldwell XLA? I don't regret going cheap in this instance. I just regret choosing the features I did, and that's on me.

Hope this helps.

These plastic ones used by the military should be available surplus - cheap. They are plastic spring loaded so they clamp on the barrel fast not screwed to it just clamped around it so you use it when you need it take it off and put it in a pocket or pouch when just carrying it. Way lighter than the metal bipods.
