I have a friend who has a Browning Gold shotgun with the factory camo stock. He removed it from a gun safe the other day and the stock is sticky. So much so that a if you pressed a sheet of paper to the stock it would tear before coming lose. The entire surface of both the butt stock and forearm are sticky. He has not applied any thing to the stock ( insect repelent, oil etc) that could have caused this nor does he store any chemicals in the safe. Any ideas?

thanks

The wood has been sweating from the inside out. more than likely it will need to be refinished. Is he safe in a temp controlled part of the house? i have seen a few do this and also seen recoil pads turn to a soft goo.

The stock is some type of plastic, no wood. The house is lived in and the safe is in a above grade area and climate controled. what puzzles me is that every square inch is sticky, so it cannot be insect repelant or a bore solvent. Could Remington's gun oil do this if confined to a safe? This guy does not over use the oil at all, but uses the wipe down cloths impregnated with Rem-oil. It would be a fairly easy fix if the stock was wood, but a stripper/solvent might attack the stock as well as the finish. Any ideas ???
