I had a rifle in the shop last night and as always with a full cleaning everything comes off the rifle to be cleaned and oiled. I always check the springs for the right tension, pins for burrs and anything else that might hurt the rifle. I was checking the extractor to see if it was in tip top shape and look what I found. This might happen once a year if that so I took this as a photo opportunity.

It looks fine to the eye.

I then took a small pick and see if it had any play in it this is what I found.
you can see where it has broken loose from the rivite.

The owner said there has been around 1000+ rounds thru this rifle and he has noticed nothing wrong with it. tonight I'm going to punch it out and rivite(sp) a new in. I'll try to post pictures of how it is replaced.

I have no idea what to look for...... any chance you can use a small instrument and point to the problem?  I would really like to know.

THanks

In this pic it looks like it is okay. there is not a gap where the rivite and ejector ring are.

In this picture you can see where it has broken at the rivite.

ok.... I did see that difference in the pic, but didn't know that was the extractor.  Thanks for the extra detail!  How does that little thing work?  How does it "extract"?

It clicks around the rim of you cartridge and pulls it out of the chamber when you pull the bolt back.  The other little round thing is the ejector which is spring loaded.  When your brass clears the chamber and action it pushes out and flips the round out to the side.

Take a bolt out of one of your guns and grab a round and push it is to the bolt face.  You can see pretty well how they work that way.

Forgive my ignorance.  I don't recognize the bolt brand/model.

Bigdaddy I urge you to be very carefull while punching that out. It seems to me you have an issue with punches. We don't need you trying to lose more fingers.
