I saw in the August 2005 edition of Field and Stream magazine there was an article on four "affordable" scopes that offered good quality.  These scopes were:  Leopauld VX-I, Bushnell 3200 Elite, Weaver Grand Slam, and Cabelas Premium Alaskan Guide.  The evaluators felt the Cabelas scope had the best optics out of the four scopes.  Does anyone have any experience with the Alaskan Guide scope?  Does anyone know where this scope is made?

How the Weaver Grand Slam didn't come out on top in this comparison I have no clue. The Grand Slam is more comparable to Vx-III's, 4200's and Monarch's. I've never looked through any Cabelas optics but I have experience with the others. Even to throw the Leupold scope in an evaluation of "affordable scopes that offer good" quality is ludicrous. This article sounds pretty shotty to me.

I'd have to agree with Brady on that one.  The Weaver is an AWSOME scope especially for the money.  About the only complaint I've seen it that some people dont like the adjustment ring based on its looks.  My personal opinion, I would not list the VX-1 as a great buy.  Not that it is a bad scope but there are a lot better scopes out there for the money.  I cant believe that the Burris Fullfield did not make the list and its about the same price as a Leupold VX-I and much better scope in my opinion.

As for the Cabelas scopes, cant comment I have heard good things about their binoculars.

I'm with Brady on this one. I have heard of many that had to be sent back to Cabelas for repair issues. The Gram Slam and the Elite 3200 have better optics as well as the Nikon Monarch. As far as rhe Leupold VI I would use it to drive tent stacks. The only thing the VI has going for it is the warranty.
