Well, I bought a pistol the other day.  I broke down and spent some money that I really need for about a zillion other things, but the way things are going in America these days, I figured I'd better get with the program and buy another gun before they burn up the Bill of Rights at the next Public Bookburning or something.

I bought a Smith & Wesson M&P 45.  I haven't shot it yet because I do not live in the country at the moment, but I will be shooting it in a couple of weeks on my days off.

Here is an Internet photo of the gun.....

This is my first "plastic" pistol!!  Big Grin    I had found a Para Ordnance SSP for sale at this gun store near me and I really had my tongue hanging out for it....but by the time I had myself talked into actually parting with the money; someone had scarfed it up.  It was a used gun on consignment for $649 so I thought that was pretty good [ it looked virtually new ]--but I was trying to keep costs lower than that.....but, I had finally decided "what the hell--grab it!" but it had disappeared.  It was very nice...I would have added an extended slide release....but it was wonderful.

Anyway----I had to start over and go shopping for alternatives.  So I began to look at other guns.  Glocks were everywhere, naturally, and I have always managed to shoot decently with the Glocks but they just don't turn me on.  I am one of those dinosaurs that like walnut stocks on my rifles and pistols made out of STEEL.  Bucky

But when I started handling this Smith at the counter I was really impressed with it.  It was on consignment for $549 so I bought it.  I like the feel of it better than the Glock.  I have one of the Safety-less ones like the one in the above picture.  The trigger is DAO ( which I really did not want ) but I can live with that....in that respect it is Glock-like.  No safety, draw and squeeze....the triggers of these Smiths can be worked on if it is unsatisfactory.

If anyone has any info or comments about these M&Ps I would love to hear all of your comments.  My only experience with 45s ( other than occasionally shooting someone's 45 Auto ) was with Colt Single Action Army 45s....which I don't have anymore.

Nice rig!  The only experience I have with a 45 is kind of like yours.... shooting someone else's.  Actually, my Uncle had one.  I think it was his father-in-laws, seems like it was a retirement gift from the Air Force.  It was a 1911 of some sort and seemed kind of clunky in my hands.  I'd probably like it better now that I'm older and have shot a few handguns.

Nice pistol, Ed!  The M&P's have received very good reviews, and the guys I know who have one have really praised it.  One co-worker of mine who recently bought one told me that it has become his favorite pistol, and he owns a BUNCH of auto pistols from all of the big names.  Several police departments around the country have been converting over to the M&P as well.  I've never shot one, but when I handled one in a store, I really liked the way the grip felt.  I predict you will really like it!

Very good pistole...  I have a student who has one and it is an excellent piece of hardware.  His loves the 230gr bullets.  Seems to be better on recoil and more accurate with those.

Look forward to hearing your thoughts post range. Like you I'm still on the all steel page. But if you give this a Thunbs Up then I will have to consider expanding my options. I miss my ole Combat Commander and have put getting one on my list of things to aquire. But if the recoil isn't crazy and you actually like the Plastic for some reason. Well I may have to update my thinking. I've been listening to Kickboxer Rifle Dude and the others also, so your thoughts will help decide what happens next. What do you plan to feed er when you can get to it? And what kinda of ranges/distance will you be shootin?

The M&Ps are great guns Ed.  I have spent quite a bit of time shooting my buddies and I definitely would recommend that gun as one you can completely rely upon.  The Glock, XD, and M&P are three of the best most reliable guns you can buy IMO.  Good choice.  Thunbs Up

My only dislike about it and this is just a me problem as my friend and a couple other guys we shoot with don't have this problem.  But upon the trigger break and recoil the trigger stings my finger somehow..  It must have to do with how the trigger bends and how I place my finger upon the trigger.  I have never had the problem with any other pistol and I have shot a lot of them, except the Smith Sigma which had the same trigger.  But other than that they are a very nice pistol to shoot and I really like them.

I think you made a good choice Ed. I like that you can change the backstrap of the grip to fit your hand. I bought a SIGMA 40 after taking an armorer's course years ago, and I liked it. I'd like to buy a M&P in 40, but I'm so invested in Glocks.
Supertool, the stinging your getting in recoil is probably the trigger guard pinching your finger between the trigger. Glocks do it to me. The cure was a stronger grip.

I bought two boxes of ammunition.  A regular old box of 230 gr. MC ( 50 in a box--- like God intended ) and an itty bitty smitty little tee-nitesy box of 20 [ !! Shocked] Cor-Bon 185 gr. JHP for shooting Bad Guys (  ....and STOP signs.....Bucky )

I will have to watch so that that gun doesn't pinch my finger....  Shocked

Well, I'm glad everyone thinks it is a good pistol because it was New To Me....I hadn't been looking at pistols in years........my idea of a pistol is an old Colt Woodsman Second Series or a Single Action Army like USFA.......I would have liked a 1911 but the one I wanted got bought and the rest were too expensive.......besides the M&P has ELEVEN shots!!!   Big Grin

I am real happy waving it around at the wallpaper in my little den!!!   Roll on Floor Laughing

Nice gun.

They call those .45 Hollowpoints "Flying Ashtrays" for a good reason!
