I saw these binos on close out at Cabelas. They are a porro prism design.

Then I saw an ad on another bulletin board where a guy has a pair for sale, and they are roof prisms.I didnt realize that B&L made the Discoverers in both styles.Seems odd that they used the same model name for 2 different types of binos.

Do any of you know anything about that?I thought they just made the porro design glases.

B&L makes several roofs and poro's. The poro's are suposed to give you a slightly better image quality, however, the roofs are more durable. Both are excellant bino's. Roof's are more compact which I think is an advantage. Unless you can get a really great deal on the poro's, I would get the roof's in a heartbeat.

B&L made Discoverers in both roof and porro prism designs.  The roofs were available as 7x and 10x42 and the porros in 8x and 10x42.

Actually Bushnell has always made these binoculars and branded them B&L. When B&L decided to not renew their branding license with Bushnell all B&L sports optics (binoculars, spotting scopes, etc.) were relabeled with the Bushnell name.

Around that time the decision was made to discontinue the porro prism Discoverers.  Cabela's is selling the last of these and they are fantastic binoculars.  They are an absolute steal at the $180 for which they are being sold. Get one while you can.

Roof prism Discoverers (which also are excellent) are still being made by Bushnell and have had numerous improvements made to them over the years.  When first introduced they were not phase-correction coated. Later this feature was added. Last year additional "light gathering" coatings were applied to these (as well as the Elites) which Bushnell calls their XTR coatings. In short, Discoverers are a complex product and you really need to pay attention to what exactly you are buying if you buy used as some will be significantly better than others and it can be difficult to know just which rendition you are getting.  Because of these complexities, were I buying a roof prism Discoverer, I would personally stick to only buying new, so that I would be sure to get the very best available.
