Hi,  I am a first time poster who is in need of your help.  I have a Rem. 1187 sp with a cantilever barrel.  I am looking to put a variable power scope on it in the $250. or less range.  What would you recommend  in this price range that would have the best quality.  I am looking for a scope that has quality glass, very good light gathering ability and good eye relief.  I was thinking of 3-9x40 variable with a crosshair type redicle.
Thanks in advance
Fran.

Welcome to the OT

Don't think you need a 3-9..could go with  2-7  or similar  power range for a slug gun ..
but if a 3-9 is what you have your heart set on- Bushnell 4200 Elite is the way to go ..with some judicious shopping -should be able to nab you one around $250

Thanks for the quick response.  No My heart is not totally set on a 3x9, but am looking for the most for my money.  You guys seem to be very knowledgable and will listen to any advice offered.
Thanks
Fran.

I like something with a little lower end, say 1.5x or 2x, for those up close and personal shots.

That Bushnell 4200 Elite looks like one fine scope but do you think 3.3 is enough eye relief for a shotgun?
Thanks
Fran.

Weaver V3 works well on shotguns and are only about $140.

Fran,

I hunt with a shotgun as well- my preference is a 1.5-6. I have a few of them Kahles, Nikon, Sightron and Burris. I prefer these since they are brighter at both dusk and dawn than most 3-9's. More importantly they they have a wider field of view if you need to acquire your target while it is running. My 14 year old daughter has a Bushnell 4200 in 1.5-6 on her 20 guage and has yet miss a deer/target she has shot at. I would rate it a little behind the Kahles but pretty close to the Nikon.
