I just picked up a 450 Bushmaster upper and now need a scope for it. I have an Elite 4200 3-9X40mm on my 6.8 which I got a great deal on. I'm satisfied.
Are there any scopes that exceed the new Elite line for under $300?
If not, does the new Elite line offer any advantages over the older 4200 line? Does the Ultra Wide Band Coating offer ANY noticeable difference over the 4200?
As you can see, I'm leaning towards the Elite in 3-9X40.
Convince me if there are any better scopes for the $$.

One more thing. Is the "Firefly" reticle a gimmick? How long does it glow after "charging" with a flashlight? Does it bleed...?

 Thanks

I have not tried the new elites but I do like my 4200 since I got it new for under $200.

To my eyes, the weaver classics glass seem real close with better internal adjustments (IMO) and it seems that I read somewhere that they were made it the same factory as the Elites.

Maybe, somebody will confirm or give more knowledge.

Good Luck

Eagle

PS: IMO...unless you luck out and find an awesome deal, you will be hard pressed to find better for the money of the Weaver Classic and Elites (4200)

I don't have any first hand experience with the new elite's, but IMO the original 4200 is pretty tough to beat in that price range. again,IMO the firefly is not a gimmick, I had one and I liked it well enough in low light. a 5 to 10 second charge would get me a good 30 minutes of glow time and it does not "bleed". It is however a very thick reticle. great for hunting, not so much for paper punching. You dont mention what your intended use is, but mine was on an 1895 45-70 for hog hunting swamps, and it would sure enough hold it's own.

I am a big fan of the Elites ..BUt on a rifle like the 450 ( I have onre also ) , I believe you would be better served by a 2-7  VS the 3-9 magnification range ... Another scope to look at is the Nikon Monarch  2-8 ..works well ( albeit without raingaurd of the Elite )... BTW .. I have a Minox 1.5-8 on mine and it fits the bill ideally , but at a little over your budget

What about the Bushnell Legend Ultra HD? Is it a contender--it would fit his budget.

The Elite 3-9X40 is still at the top of my list at around $275.
It'll be used mostly for hunting and some plinking and paper punching.

Anybody compare the optical quality of the Monarch line to the Elite?

Me and 2 of my sons compared a 3-9x40 monarch ucc to an elite 4200 3-9x40 out actually hunting with both at the same time, and IMO it was about tit for tat. the third scope present that day was an elite 3200 3-9x40 and both of the other scopes were comfortably ahead of it.

One of my favorite low light scopes is a Bushnell Elite 4200 2.5-10x40 with the Firefly reticle. I don't use the illumination feature much but I just love the super bold posts for low light, but still has just enough thin wires in between for precision aiming in good light. If you haven't looked thru one you should check it out in person.

I ordered the Bushnell Elite 3-9x40 w/Firefly reticle.
I'll do a side-by-side with my 4200 to see if there's any noticeable difference optically between the two.
