First, thanks for this great forum. I've learned a lot reading some of the posts.

I'm from the US, but stationed in Germany.  I just got my German hunting licence and bought a Heym SR30 in 6.5x55 Swede.  I want a scope that I can use for stand hunting for the little reh deer in the day, as well as on smaller boar at night.  I've looked at the 2.5-10 x 50 Kahles and the 3-9 x 50 Zeiss Conquest.  The Conquest seems to run about $550 and the Kahles ~$850.  Anybody have any insight into these two scopes and can justify the Kahles over the Conquest?  I suppose most of the cost increase is due to lens quality?  Any other scopes recommended for general use with good light gathering capability?

Thanks!

Welcome to OT and thank you for serving our country.

I will say the Conquest, since I have only handled a couple of Kahles inside of buildings and at a range once.

That said, I'm quite sure either would serve you well in all except maybe "night conditions". Not sure the reticle will still be visible.

Have you considered a illuminated reticle??

Thank you...

I looked at a few illuminated reticles.. but from what I've seen, that bumps the price up to $1200+.  Doing a quick search, I couldn't find a Conquest with an illuminated reticle.  Do they make those?

So you say as far as optical qualities, the Kahles is not significantly better than the Conquest (to warrant the $300+ bigger pricetag)?  Also, if you had $1000 to spend on a mid-range (min 2-3x and max of 9-10x) that you'd go with the Conquest?

Not trying to be difficult... I just need a little convincing.  I know that by buying a scope for twice as much in this category doesn't get you a scope that is twice as good... Basically paying for small increments of improvements with large sums of money.  I'm just looking to get the right experience to help me make my decision since I knew squat about scopes before reading these posts.

Thanks again.

JC

I'm quite sure either scope would serve you well.

I'm saying that the Conquest is a great mid priced scope, and no, the Kahles, IMHO, isn't worth the extra $$ over the Conquest.

Again, in my opinion, you would have to buy a S&B, Zeiss Diavari, etc. to warrant paying more money than the cost of a Conquest, Sir.

They are that good of a scope.

But, please continue to read through the archives.

No joy on lit reticle for a Conquest.

Thank you for the help....

I think I'm set on the Conquest 3-9 x 50mm.  I like the German #4 reticle.  Anyone know if the #4 is etched like the z-plex?  SWFA is one of the few companies to carry the #4 and they don't specify if the reticle is etched.

Looks like you can get a good deal on a Kahles over there.   You should look at the Kahles CL models.  They are very bright with a huge view.  I've never been in a situation where an illuminated reticle would be any benefit.

Yep, its etched.

We just put some Zeiss Conquest on the SampleList.com site but no #4s.
