I've got a Winchester 94AE in .44 magnum that I can't seem to shoot well at 50 yards with iron sights.  I know there are folks out there who are going to suggest an aperture sight and while I appreciate the 'purity' of an aperture, I'm just not a fan.

I need glass because I'm old enough to wear spectacles for more than just reading.

The 94AE is a "Trapper" style, 1999 vintage, straight gripped version with the big lever loop.  It's a great handling gun and Indiana now allows .44mag for deer season.

I had a 3x9x40 Burris on the shelf of the gun cabinet and mounted it on Leupold mounts, but I tell ya', it's just too long and adds too much weight.  It changes the handling of the gun too much.

I've never had a need for one of those 20mm, short scopes before, but it seems like the right fit for this gun.

I don't want to spend over $300 so I was thinking the UltraLight series Leupold 2.5x FXII might be the right choice.  It's certainly lightweight and comparatively short, but I was wondering if anyone else had any experience that they could share.

Is there some reason that would be a bad choice based upon some else's experience?

Sure would appreciate some insight.

Thanks so much,
Gremlin

I got a Sightron Big Sky 1.25-5x-20 on my Marlin .357 lever gun.  It fits it perfectly IMO and has a great mag range for that particular rifle.  Downside is the cheek weld is pretty much non existant,
but can't have it all on a gun like that I guess.  I had a 4x Leupold on my 45-70.  But it now rides on a .22 ruger.  I just thought it was to much mag for that gun.  a 1-4ish variable would fit it better.  The 2.5x Leupold or a 1-4ish variable would be a great choice for your gun IMO.

That Sightron 1.25-5x20 seems to have been discontinued.

Personally, I think the little Weaver V3 makes the best option in this case.

Fixed 2.5x would also work well.

+1 on the Weaver. I have one on my 45-70 and its held up fine. Doesnt add much weight or bulk either.

The aperture sight is not so much for the "purity", but because it is easier to use in dark conditions than a lot of scopes.  If you are going through a lot of brush there is no glass to get scratched or lens caps to loose or get closed on you.

The fixed 2.5x would be my choice, if I went with a scope.  Then I'd get some flavor of #4 reticule.

I run the Williams open sights on my lever gun, but also put on a scout scope on it.  I like the setup, although I tend to use the open sight more than the scope.  I run a Leupy 2.5 scout.  Good combo.

I was thinking of the weaver myself or possibly one of the Burris timberlines. The redfield 2-7 is also pretty compact though more power than you need imho.

+1 on the Burris. I have one on my Win 94 in .32 Spl. It's a keeper.

I have a Ruger 44 mag carbine and just put an old Bushnell Banner 2.5x20 on it.  I think that should work well.  Now I just have to load for it so I can get it into the field...

I also like the the Weaver V3 1-3x20, nice little scope and reasonably priced.

Thank you for all the excellent quality replies.

I especially liked the picture of the Marlin with the Sightron scope mounted on it--that really gave me a feel for how one of these smaller 20-28mm scopes will affect the 'look' of a lever gun.

While the Burris Fastfire is intriguing, there's just something sacrilegious in my mind about putting something that modern on a Winchester 94AE.

Looking at the Weaver 1-3X20, it shows the eye relief at just a tick over 3".  Isn't that a bit tight for a gun that tosses a heavy bullet like the .44?  Everything else looks "right" about that particular scope except for the comparative shortness of the eye relief.

The FXII 2.5 shows almost 5" of eye relief and I've always found that extra bit of relief let me get on target much faster--something to be concerned about when you're no better hunter than I am!

Is that 3.1 eye relief accurate on the Weaver?  Does anyone have an opinion?  I'm probably going to buy the Leupold unless someone's had experience with the Weaver that says it's longer than that.

Thanks again, I'm usually a "lurker" here--member since '04--and am always amazed at how civil and helpful everyone is.

3.1" is not that unheard of for a scope and 4" is considered to be fairly generous. I really would not be worried about getting banged with the scope during recoil as the 44 isn't really a high recoiling round. Actually the stock on on my buddies 44 is sort of short to me so I would be concerned with getting a scope with a really long eye relief far enough away from my eye. having said all of that the leupold is a nice little scope so you could certainly do worse.

Weaver V3 eyerelief is longer than 3.1". Owing to low magnification, it is also very flexible eye relief.
