I just bought a rifle my old body can actually carry all day, a Kimber Montana in 308. I want to make this my main rifle. I will be shooting mostly deer, elk and I have always wanted to do a moose hunt. Since this is a small gun and since I am trying to keep the weight down, I am looking for a lightweight scope that will properly fit this gun. I am thinking of a Leupold 2.5-8 x 36 VXIII or a Swarovski 3-9 x 36 American Riflescope. Will I be giving up a lot by going to a 36mm instead of a 40mm? In addition, do you think the Swaro is worth the extra bucks?

Thanks,

Sam

Welcome, SamC!

If the budget will allow (and I'm thinking since you bought the Kimber and the fact you were considering the Swaro that it might), I'd put the Kahles CL 2-7X36 on that bad boy and never look back!

It's perfect for a nice, lightweight little rifle like the Kimber Montana -- superb optics, great FOV, and light and compact so that it doesn't overpower the rifle and ruin it's superb balance and sweet handling.  The 36mm objective is plenty large enough for the 2-7X power range, and 7X is plenty magnification for most of the hunting you would ever do with a .308.  Plus, even though a 40mm objective isn't large, still, the 36mm objective may allow you to use lower scope mounts, depending on which mounts you use.  The lower you're able to mount your scope, the more likely your eye will align with it naturally when you have to shoulder your rifle quickly.  I also like the 2-7X36 model because it is the only one of the CL scopes that don't have the side parallax focus, which I personally don't want on a scope intended for big game hunting.

I'd second the Kahles,  great scopes and great binoculars.  To answer your question is the Swarovski or now perhaps thinking the Kahles worth the extra money over a LP VXIII = YES!!

As for going to a 36mm bell to  40mm personally I don't think you give up much perhaps some light gathering at higher magnifications but I'd let the optics experts on here address that one.

By the way congrats on the Kimber that is a very very nice gun.

happy Shooting

AC

Thanks folks for the advice. BTW, do you think a scope with a  40mm bell  would be to big for this gun? Does anyone make a compact one 40mm?

Thanks,

Sam

burris makes a scope with a 36mm and to be honest i dont know if you would notice the 4mm difference, i dont see why a 40mm wouldnt work

Very nice rifle and very well made....- the Kimber Montana is about as light as you would want to go without any sacrifices . scope wise- you really can't go wrong with any of the suggested optics, and their 36mm bell really not a hindrance considering the quality of the lenses. However, could you use a 40 mm - why not ? It's your call...decide on a  scope size your comfortable with that balances with the size of the rifle, and decide from there..

Well, at the last minute I changed my order to a Montana in 30 06, wanted a bit more punch. This rifle is about a pound heavier than the same in 308. Think I should move up a bit and add a 3x9x40 on this baby? I was eying a Kahles in 3x9 without the MZ. What do you think?

Sam

I got a Kimber Montana in 30-06 topped with a 3-9X40 Zeiss Conquest, Talley Lightweights (lows). Handles nice! Shoots even better!

You won't be dissappointed by the Kahles. Nice scope. I almost got one, but then I came across a deal on the Conquest that I just couldn't pass up.
