I've got a Aimpoint Micro H1 (1x, 4 MOA red dot) and am trying to decide where it should go on the rail.  Are there pros and cons for one end of the rail or the other?  Is it inherently more accurate or are there tactical advantages at one or the other?  I guess the fact that the red dot is so large argues for putting it farther away, as long as it remains easily visible.  I wonder what their assumption is regarding distance to eye when they determine that it's 4 MOA.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

It's all subjective, really. I find Aimpoints "work" better for me pulled in somewhat while I like EOTechs out in front (on the upper) a little more. YMMV.

The best advise i can tell you for position is to place it at multiple points and find out where it works best for you for rapid engaugement.  Like Yak said some run different types at different positions.  Dont' worry about the looks or where it is placed but mroe or less where it works best for you.  I always close my eyes, shoulder and when i open my eyes i want ot see the dot on target.  Normally you'll find a sweet spot on the rail where this works better than others but that only in my experience.   As far as accuracy, the dot will be the same size on target no matter where you put it on the rail.

The idea behind both the aimpoint and the eotech is close encounters of the nasty kind. So having both eyes open and head up gives the shooter the most opportunity in terms of field of view. Both sites are 1x so no perspective is lost when moving the optic as far ahead as possible. The further forward they are the better they work on NFA firearms. This one on an AK is really forward, but notice more so how far forward the original iron site was (whats left of it) in terms of the over design and purpose of the weapon.

Thanks for the comments.  A couple responses:

The red dot is a fixed size and it's angular (i.e. apparent, not actual) size will vary as it's moved closer/farther from the eye.  Since I also use the dot for target shooting, a little smaller would be better -- my math

I originally had the Aimpoint just forward of the rear iron sight, on an UltiMAK rail, as in the picture above.  Seemed to work there, but in a dark room (same as the eyes closed test, I guess) I'd sometimes have trouble finding the dot when raising the rifle.  It's currently further down the rail and it feels like it's easier to find the dot.  I suspect this is a matter of geometry and not just personal preference.

The ratio of the size difference within the distance of the sight radius is small, 100x3x12 or12/3600 or about 3 parts per thousand. The difficulty in finding the dot in you case is due, more than likely, to a poor stock fit.

It is an Ultimak base, which is a base and the gas tube combined.
