My vote is for the Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40, or the 3-9x50. If you vote for other please state which brand and model you like. I am interested to see what the majority of people would prefer and why.

If you had asked "What is the best variable scope for low light situations?" I probably would have gone a low range variable from Burris Signature line with one of those highly visible reticles. Conquest has great glass, but I think you'll lose sight of that reticle before you lose sight of the animal.
Fixed magnification scopes have fewer lenses and will generally carry more light to the eye. Sightron S2 has two excelent fixed mag scopes: 4x32 and 6x42 which get my vote.

I would have to say a now discontinued 3-9x50 Burris Signature series that I owned about 5-6 years ago was the absolute brightest scope I have ever looked through. You could crank it up to 7x and still make out deer at 200-300 yards 5 -10 minutes after legal shooting times and it had a really wide field of view at 3x. Wish I had never sold it and the M70 it was mounted on. I always figured I would buy another later, had no idea Burris would discontinue it. It was more compact than the two 3-12x44s that I had owned that had the adjustable objectives and clearily out preformed them optically speaking. Still have one of the 3-12x's and let the 3-9x50 go, I feel like an idiot.

Best sub $500 low light scope I have seen is a Pentax Lightseeker 3-9x 43mm.

Maybe you should have listed specific models for all of them instead of just the Zeiss.
