Which hunting scope gives the best low light/light gathering for $500 or less.Would like something in 3x9x40. I currently have a VX-III, Bushnell 4200, Burris Signature, and Kahles.
Of these the 4200 seems to be the best for low light conditions. How does the Conquest or other perform in low light?

All of the ones you mentioned do fairly well the new VX3 is better than the VXIII was by quite a bit.  Zeiss Conquiest seems to be a favorite and the Bushnell 4200 is right in there in the mix with them.  However if you are really talking low light you also start to need an illuminated reticle and the 2.5-10x56 Trijicon Accupoint is the hands down winner or most useful low light scope.  Other factors should also be considered because if you like to dial in correction once you get to $500 it would be a true shame not to spend another hundred and buy a Super Sniper  3-9x42 which also has very good quality glass and many features that make it quite useful.

Just remember, when comparing optical quality, to get an accurate analysis all scopes need to be comparible with each other.  Otherwise, its the "apple vs orange" syndrom.

In that price range the new VX3 is very good. You need in my opinion a minimum of a 42mm objective to get better results in low light. The firefly reticle in the Elite series is a nice feature when it starts getting dark.I have had great results with the Sightron S2 Big Sky in low light when hunting. It sure gives you a few extra minutes.

I like the Bushnell FireFly reticle in the elite scopes for this price range and low light ability
