I have a Savage model 10 PC .308 and I am looking for an optic. I have narrowed it to a few but I am looking for some feedback. I am looking for this gun to be a do all rig for me 25 - 800 yards. I have a Warne 20 MOA base on it already now ready for the glass. Narrowed to the SS 5-20, Viper PST and Trijicon 5-20 on the top end of my price range and the Weaver 3-15 and bushnell 6-24 right in the middle of my price range.
I think I would like a zero stop but not a deal breaker as you can see only the PST on this list has one. Also, I kinda feel the same about FFP I guess but probality could live without it. I do like the new Bushnell elite tactical 6-24 that's coming out in March maybe I should wait for that? Open to all thoughts thanks. |

The SWFA SS will have much better glass than the others you mentioned. It would be my choice and not look back. The Trijicon will have limited elevation, just FYI, only 50 MOA i believe. The PST does have zero stop but with 10mils per turn I've never gotten lost in the dial of the ss 5-20 either. The weaver is getting good reviews but the glass isn't in the same league as the SS. The bushnell may also have an elevation limitation adjustment, i'd have to look at the specs. Overall the SS will do all you want and some and you'll not regret it.

Yeah, I am clear on the limited amount of elevation on the Trijicon an that is a big issue. I have heard so many great things about the SS but have never put my hands on one. I would love to see one before I spend 1,500.00 but it's the leader in the clubhouse. Also, I left out a Leupold MK4 4.5-15. Does the SS have a resetable zero?

Yes to re set the knob to zero you remove the single top screw and pull the knob straight up then position it and press it back down and install the screw being careful not to loose the rubber washer.
I very much enjoy the two SS 5-20 x50 scopes I have and I also have a 5-20 green mildot Accupoint and have had a red post. They do only have 50moa so not ideal for ultra long range but good glass nice feel to the controls and the best illumination system in the market. If I bought the SS i would probably buy the non illuminated model. My two are illuminated but I rarely use it as I have several trijicon products that i use in low light.

25yds? I am guessing maybe hunting? If so I would want about 3x max on the low end. It will be very difficult to find something at 25yds with a 5x low end. But rather than guess what are you going to use this for at 25yds? |

Yeah,a hunting and range gun that I can push too 800 yds plus. I hunt alot of big clear cuts where the shots can be from 100-400yds. I get it yeah 25 yds is very tight for a 5x on the bottom end. Thats the main reason I do like the 3-15 Weaver Tac. Being ex-army I am so comfortable to my point of aim being a dot thats whats attractive about the ILL reticle in the Trijicon and from what I see the SS is a red center dot. I dont like the entire reticle to light-up.

To get a good 25 yd shot, i'd look at a ring that had a picatinny rail on top so you could put a red dot on it for all things that close.

Or one that mounts just off to the side. I see those on a lot of three event guns.
